Navigation Problem [ The external system is not connected ]

So my Navigation started malfunctioning a little while ago and was stuck in sort of a boot loop you could say. Kept cycling through the below screens and occasionally booting all the way though only to crash and start the boot loop again. Recently its been just at a complete black screen and if I push the map button it says "The external system is not connected".

I went downtown the other day and it briefly started boot looping again. Makes me think it could be related to loose wiring or something and hitting a series of pot holes led to something being connected again.

I haven't had a chance to look into it yet but only thing I can think of is loose wiring or a blown fuse.

Has anybody experienced anything similar to this or has any recommendations?

I also noticed my calender and maintenance screens are missing from the system.

Climate and audio screens work perfectly fine.

^^^...except there is nothing in the trunk?...its an 06 IS250.

I would eject the disc, what Nav version are you running? Is it still the OEM disc? If it is a burned disc copy, that may be your issue. This sounds like a disc read problem.

I would also remove the Nav unit and check all of the plugs in the connected in the back.

Lexus had some issues, with the touch screen soldier points (dry joints) on the circuit boards, but are mainly isolated to the touch screen and not to its functionality and error messages you are getting.

Not much but its a start, for a non warranty vehicle. I would try to clean the Nav disc and reboot by reloading the disc (remove the disc completely).

lol he means take out the nav unit (whole center dash area) and disconnect/reconnect it..i think for an 06 the CD is on the inside of the small brown area on the dash where the clock is..It can be removed somehow I believe

I'm going to try removing the disc and putting back the OEM one. To remove the disc I think I'd have to remove the clock plate and go into the service menu by holding info and switching the lights on and off.

Perhaps get a load test done on my battery at CT. Last week my battery died while parked with the headlights and hazard lights on for about 10-15 mins. The Nav issue has been present since before that but the battery dying so quickly may suggest its weak.

Its most likely the stock battery as I haven't changed it since I got the car in 08 and I doubt whoever had it before me did either. So the battery is probably around 7 years old.

From reading the other threads on Club Lexus most sign point to a fried Nav ECU, Which i'm really hoping isn't the case.

Do you mean to remove the current OEM disc and put the same OEM disc back in?

I ask because if you remove a newer disc and place an older version disc back in the system, it will no longer work.

Don't put that disc in!

It will not work, you can't go backwards, once you've updated.

In fact, it may cause further problems.

I would eject the current ripped version, and reinsert it. I would recommend ripping another copy of the 11.1 or the newest v12 and try that first.

Can you eject the disc from the normal front page screen?

Also check the antennae plug (little one on the back

Can't access any of the front screens related to Nav. Just says External System Not Connected and shows a black screen. I'll have to open it all up and see. Hitting clear codes on that screen wouldn't be any help either I assume

Thank god you have a Sewell discount!

I'll sell you one for $500, drive to your house and install it!

...and no way will they be allowed to ship/ transport lead batteries over the boarder to Canada!

my Company is about the same price as the dealer (Interstate).

...prices include labor so there is a time/ service installation component built into this kind of pricing.

Cash and Carry will save you this costing...but your on your own. Some guys can handle this, some can't.

the battery on the ISF is a group 24 (size) and has reversed terminals. not sure about your car.

Things to be careful of....

1. buying the wrong battery size (too tall), can and will short out when you close the hood of the car and it contacts both terminals.
2. buying the wrong terminal type and connecting the - and + to the wrong posts - happens all the time on the IS300
3. pulling the battery out without supplying temporary power will cause all of the vehicle learned values to reset in the transmission, radio, clock etc...
4. Terminals tend to be a little stiff on our cars (especially the positive), they also fit loose and need to be tightened correctly depending on the battery manufacturer
5. Battery tie down bar "J" style hook is a PITA (just on the IS300)
6. wear some nitrile gloves (probably eye wear too) to protect your hands from terminal acid and powder.

Some people think this is an easy job....

.....once you get by all of this its a piece of cake.

Has anyone fixed this problem yet?

My parents own a 06 IS350, it was working fine.. once they updated the GPS disc they started having problems.. parents took it back to dealer they re-loaded a new copy and said that if the problem persists they would have to change the navi ECU. lone be hold most days it works.. some days it doesn't.. does anyone know work arounds to make it work? dad is going to dealer tomorrow to see what they say and the cost to repair it but other alternative options will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't gotten around to trying any of the remedies yet but since your problems started right after a disc update I would like to think that has something to do with it and its not the ECU that just coincidentally decided to blow up at the same time.

When you say it doesn't work what exactly do you mean? Do you get the same system not connected error?

Saw this post about the issue on Club Lexus. I should probably give this a shot as well.

I did swap out the battery which didn't bring any change to the situation.

Hello I know this thread is a little old but just want to share my experience so info can be out there for others in the future.

I recently experienced the "external system not connected" and my navigation stopped working. I removed the navigation ecu (where the navigation DVD is) and opened it up. There was some corrosion on one of the board and might have shorted some of the pins. Might be from the humidity? Anyways I sprayed some electronics board cleaner I got from radio shack and cleaned it with a toothbrush. Reinstalled it in the car and it works now.

Conclusion: if you have this error, the navigation ecu is bad somehow. In my case I was able to clean it.

Its what they call a dry joint on the board.

Its the reason why people use the soldier pens to fix this initially. I feel that cleaning the board in this manner is only a temporary fix and it will return eventually.

Thing is though I don't know how to tell which joint is the problem. I tried cleaning off the rust with gasoline and a tooth brush, got the rust off in most parts. Nav didn't come back to life though.

It might also be that ribbon cable that's causing issues.

So Denso has a trade in program through the Lexus Dealership where I can bring them my old one and I'll get a new one from them for $805. Re-manufactured or Refurbished I'm guessing. Plus $125 for installation if I chose to get it installed by Lexus. There's also no warranty provided if I install it myself.

I've found a couple of them online (ebay and car-part.com) ranging from $350-$1500. Its $3,072.53 on sewell with the my.is discount.

I'm also considering just getting the VAIS iVic android integration for $449 instead.
