car looks nice in the build your own, but dont see any pics of it.
its between that, tungsten and black.

I know it's all about the lighting, but as much as I like this color it looks a bit drab in some of these pics, since I know it has more of a metallic look in person, I like it. But sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't get the black onyx? It just looks SO good when it's clean, and I usually get a car wash every week or so.picus said:I think the resale difference will be negligable, however, if one were higher it would be (imo) 1) the metallic color almost always, and 2) the one that looks like its been maintained better, which is kind of up to the owner - but again, black is the hardest to maintain. The thing I would personally worry about is how popular those metallic greys are becoming. A lot of manufacturers have added those in the past few years and I think they're growing in popularity for all the reasons in this thread. Around here I see a lot of Audi's and Mazda's in metallic grey, although I personally think the Lexus paint is nicer. Because of this it might not stand out like it would have 5 years ago, I'd personally still pick it though.
Not that I want to turn you into an obsessive paint preener like me, but for tons of really good info on detailing check out autopia.org. It's a great forum with tons of info on how to keep your new car looking good.

Well I am definitely not going to knock black. Like I said, I haven't owned a non-black car for something like 12 years. And I agree - anything that isn't black or red can look a little drab, but I just know that as good as black looks clean (and damn it does), it is very difficult to keep the cars looking that way, and on top of that, regular road dirt isn't even the issue - it's the surface marring. Maybe I am too anal, but those little swirls/scratches you get just from regular everyday use drive me nuts. I think you would be shocked at the amount of work I put in trying to minimize those, and it's still a losing battle (if you ever get 5 minutes, check out this post http://autopia.org/forum/showthread.php?t=61821&page=1&pp=12 . That's a beautiful, deep shine on that G35! I agree that black is a love/hate situation. I try to keep my blk onyx clean but it's soo time consuming. However, when it is clean...it's the best color in my opinion. I detail 4 times a year and the surface marring is horrible! arghs...of course, i'm not a professional my results don't come out as good as yourspicus said:Well I am definitely not going to knock black. And a GREAT picture at that. Flip, not sure if you saw the black onyx in person, but curious which car you'd choose between the two: SGM or Black Onyx?Flipside909 said:He shouldn't be getting the credit since it was my photo he posted up.![]()
Black onyx is not a flat black..it's the same black found on alot of Lexus models including the 01-04 IS300. Both are great colors, it's just a matter of which one you like. I'd go with Smoky Granite Mica myself.Michael said:And a GREAT picture at that. Thx, Did they have any black onyx cars for your drive? I've yet to see an IS250/350 in black onyx?Flipside909 said:Black onyx is not a flat black..it's the same black found on alot of Lexus models including the 01-04 IS300. Non-metallic black is the easiest color to match with touch-up or repaints. Any non-metallic is easier to match than just about any metallic, due to the flake distribution, but of the metallics black/dark grey are definitely easier than say, a blue or red. I wouldn't let that push you either way, though - if you ever need a re-paint you're just as likely to get a good job at a good shop on metallic grey as you are on black, and for touch-ups, if you take it to someone that knows what they are doing (or if you learn) they are actually surprisngly easy to do and almost impossible to detect. In the last 6 months I've probably touched-up and wetsanded 1,000 rock chips on 100 different colors, and in the end you can't see any of them.Michael said:Picus, another question. Due to the uniqueness of Lexus' SGM, would it be much harder to have repainted, if ever needed, down the road? By that outlook might black be a much easier color to match?
No just Tungsten Pearl & Smoky Granite. Some of our local dealers here in SoCal have Black Onyx on their lot.Michael said:Thx, Did they have any black onyx cars for your drive? I've yet to see an IS250/350 in black onyx?
A bit off topic here, but can you hop in on this dicussion just to reiterate your impressions of VDIM again?Flipside909 said:No just Tungsten Pearl & Smoky Granite. Some of our local dealers here in SoCal have Black Onyx on their lot.
Maximus330I said:Yes, for some reason, I saw a sgm car mislabled as black pearl. It clearly was a mistake. My sticker was labled properly. Perhaps they changed their mind on the name? I havent really noticed any other colors coming out, but when it's dark, it really looks black. I'll look again and report back.
