This was Sat. We were following each other up to 110+ mph.... You were trying to outrun me (foolish)and nearly got killed trying to pass an 18 wheeler on the right. I was playing with you. Don't mess with the S4....

"riced out"? ricing out a car is the act of adding cosmetic pieces of plastic and vinyl, doing things to a car that don't help performance, like sticking nike stickers and a spoiler on a ford pick up, four spoilers on an economy car, etc...just because other cars copy the IS' taillights don't make it "rice" why don't you just say "chinkmobile" or "gookster"?

No boasting intended- honestly. You are correct- both are nice cars. However one is in a performance league well above another. Why get on my ass and drive aggressively? One driver is pushing his car to the limit and narrowly avoiding death while the other is sipping his coffee and looking for a new cd... Harldy a race, wouldn't you say?

I have a funny story about being arrested for driving too fast on that road a long time ago in my Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. That can be a fun road.
Anyway, why can't us is guys take a little ribbing from a guy with a nice car. He was just telling a story. Earlier on this board I heard from one of the moderators that they wanted to create an is "owners only" page. Why? Personally I like this board to read other opinions, and if they come from people with other cars, I still value it. It sounds kind of aloof to think that we have the "best" car in the world for everyone.
I love my is, but I wouldn't mind having an S4, CL-S type or a bunch of other cars out there.

Bland exterior styling + poor maintenance record + great performance = S4

Congratulations you can get to 60 mph quicker than an IS. Good for you. There are other cars that can toast you too. Go back to Audiworld unless you can add value here.

One is also in another price league well above another.

Hey, just beat the crap out of a Hyundai Excel today!!! He tried to toy with me on the freeway, but I just floored it and left him in my dust...admiring my taillights!! Does anyone know of a Hyundai Excel Owners Forum/Bulletin Board that I can go to and brag about this?

S4,
They are absolutely right.... Pick on someone in your own league like the BMW M3. It's not a fair to compare your twin turbo 250 horse car with a far cheaper Lexus IS300. But anyways....I'll keep a look out for you on the road to teach you a lesson from the IS300 drivers in this Forum.

I have 3 questions.

1. Why is the IS300 not in the same class as the S4?

2. Why then is the new M3 in the same class as the S4?

The IS300 with 225hp is about $37k driveout.
The S4 with 250hp is about $42K driveout.
The new M3 with 330hp is about $51K driveout.

3. How do you guys determine what is in which class?

The IS300 is compared to the performance sports sedans: BMW 330i and Audi A4 2.8....Had Lexus had an L-sport high performance IS300, then that would compare to the S4... The S4 would belong to the High/Ultra High performance sedans and is compared to the Saab Viggen, C43 AMG, and BMW M3 (according to Car & Driver).....

Like S4 said "However one is in a performance league well above another." Another level seems to imply that they're not in the same class. Also there a car called the A4 that is in the same class.

2. Why then is the new M3 in the same class as the S4?
It's not. The M3 is superior. But both are "performance enhanced" versions of entry luxo sedans (ie. IS300, 325/330, etc.)

2a. The IS300 with 225hp is about $37k driveout. The S4 with 250hp is about $42K driveout. The new M3 with 330hp is about $51K driveout.

Actually, the IS300 is about $34,000. (37K driveout)
The S4 is about $42,000. (46K drivout)
The difference is not chump change.

3. How do you guys determine what is in which class?
How much they cost, and what they're intended to do, and for whom.

Thanks for your quick response, EricK.

However, that's exactly what I don't understand.

The power rating and price differential between the IS300 and the S4 is even smaller than the same comparison between the S4 and the new M3.

How do these magazine people figure these classes out? The new M3(for now) and the Viggen are two-door coupes, and they are to be compared with 4-door sedans?? While the new performance sedan from Lexus, namely the IS300, is to be set in the same class as family sedans like the A4 and 3-series.

I'm confused....

Actually, the IS300 has 215hp, not 225. But the difference between the S4 and the old E36 M3 is close... 250 vs. 240. It just happens that the new E46 M3 just raised the stakes, and Audi has not countered with a new S4 yet. I guess the S4 is just caught inbetween. But if someone's got an S4, just chip that sucker! But yeah, I would think the classes would play out like this:

IS300, 325i, C240, TL, I30

330i, C320

S4 and Viggen 4-door

E46 M3 is in a class in itself

Well the M3 is BMW's high performance car done my the Motorsport division. Audi's S4 is their high performance variant done by Audi SPORT that was built to combat the M3 (E36)... With the E46 around the corner, Audi sport will create a new S4 based on the All New Audi A4 body that will be more competitve with the M3 than the existing model.... Saab has a 9-3, but that's not compared with the Audi S4, the more sporty, and more powerful Saab Viggen is...
Eric... Hope that helped
