Actually, I am afraid that we have might have met the world peak production of oil a bit earlier than forecasted. If that's the case, our economy cannot expand unless we find an alternate source that has a similar specific energy and is as cheap to get and process. Supply is peaking, Demand is constantly increasing, something has to give.....
Get used to oil/gas prices continuing to climb over the next 10 years. Prices may dip here and there but the overall trend will be that prices will be heading higher for the long term.
I don't think we as a society will force ourselves to actually develop a reasonable alternative until we have virtually depleted our world's supply. Only when there is next to none left and the richest of the rich can no longer afford it themselves will we finally force ourselves to fully develop and impletement a different solution.
