It's the main "brain" of the car. Controls things like fuel mappings, electronics, and handles all the input from the various sensors around your car. It's known as an "Engine Control Unit", hence ECU. I believe http://www.howstuffworks.com has a good bit on it, they're pretty damn good at explaining things.

ECU stands for Electric Cóckpit Umbrella

It's a feature offered on the IS300. If water finds its way inside the IS300 cóckpit, an automatic umbrella opens up keeping water from damaging the escaine/leather.

Hope this helped.

Quik that wasn't very nice misleading a newbie like that.
What ECU really stands for is:
Error Correction Unit
If you take you hands off the steering wheel it will automatically correct any alignment error problems you may have. But you have to keep you hands off the wheel no matter what!!!!!!! Preferably when you are going above 70mph

That seems to be the general consensus, I'm not too sure though since I don't drive an IS. =(

Soon though dammit! Soon! (august)

ECU refers to "Electronic Control Unit"... It is a generic term generally used to mean that there is a CPU controlling some function in the car. Actually most cars (these days) have multiple "ECUs". There is probably one controlling the ignition system, another for the ABS, another for the traction control, etc, etc.
