Hey guys, I’m doing some service on my is300 and have a couple questions when it comes to doing the water pump. Is it necessary to replace the whole pump housing as one unit, or just the pump peice itself? I see different kits some which include the whole unit, some just the pump peice. Also I’m curious how particular I should be in parts and where to find good quality for my dollar. I’ve seen some kits from autozone for 350$, and I’ve seen what looks like the exact same kit on eBay for like 90$. What’s the best place to get it?

Buy OEM: AISIN makes the OEM water pump, this is what I have and will continue to buy: More Information for AISIN WPT116 (currently $81.89, and 5% RockAuto discount coupons are abundant).

The water pump is driven off the timing belt, and so kits are designed with the assumption that you're doing a timing belt service as well, which incorporate parts therefor: idler/tensioner pulley, belt, seals/o-rings and any associated gaskets (depending the specific parts in the kit).

Yes I plan on doing atleast timing belt and tensioner as well as water pump, so that’s why I figure a lot would be the best. I’m just still not sure if I need to get a kit with the whole water pump unit or just the front half of it? And I’m worried about the quality of the timing belt, if the parts are the same I’ll totally buy the cheaper one, but I don’t want my engine to grenade because I went 100$ cheaper for a timing belt lol

I would buy the whole pump assembly: for < $80 it seems a no brainer. As far the belt, you can't go wrong with OEM, but I'm also partial to Gates; I think they provide a kit w/ the other bits as well: Gates TCK228

If any of these parts fail, there's a good chance you lose your motor and are in for a much pricier repair: if you have the funds or can save some extra $ over a few weeks, I would buy the two items I shared. I'm sure others have other experiences to share, this is just my take.

What do you think of that eBay kit I screenshotted? ^^^
It's difficult to comment: I would shy from it personally, because it's hard to trust the parts are authentic, and for just a little more you get that trust. Given that there are other sellers, also in the same area of California right near the coast, with similar images (which do not match what RockAuto/other trusted sellers show), I'd be worried they're not legitimate. Assuming they are authentic, the only concern I'd have is the quality of the timing belt, of which they do not state a manufacturer.

You can buy OEM parts at a discounted price from this website oemvehicleparts.com. I've purchased a lot of parts for my Lexus vehicles from this site. You can call as well @ 833 472-7871

When I did mine I bought this kit off eBay. I ended up getting a billet tensioner arm and I also did plugs wires coil pack boots valve cover gasket throttle body gasket and PCV valve. I believe in the idea of doing it all once and don't touch it for the next 100k.
