"Lexus uses innovative software to create a five-speed automatic transmission with a gearbox that incorporates only four "real" gears, giving the GS 300 a boost in acceleration and mileage.
Rather than adding a gear set to the transmission, Lexus uses software and hydraulic-control methods to shift the transmission's overdrive unit in synchronization with the gear-changing mechanism for the three main forward gears.
This creates a fifth ratio between the former first and second gears. The previous second, third, and fourth gears effectively become third, forth and fifth. The closer-ratio gear changes help provide claimed 8.3 second 0-to-60 acceleration and a 0-to-quarter-mile acceleration of 16.3 seconds."
