Tinted TailLights Anyone??

1037 Views 26 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  JonBoy
Hi everyone. I drive a Passat. But I am also a fan of the IS300. And thats why I am here. I tint taillights. Basically looking to see if anyone here has any interest in getting it done on their car. I haven't done any IS300's yet but if you want to see what I am talking about, I have tinted my cars tails and several others as well. Everyone loves them. Not one complaint. I think it will look great on an IS300.

These are the stock lights off a Passat

These are how they look after I tint them, notice how shiny, glossy and even it looks.

This is how they look with the lights on, there is only a slight slight decrese in light output.

Here is one more shot from a different angle

If anyone is interested, please post here.

Thanks

Jon

looks sweeeeet, show more pics, maybe the detail involved!
What kind of price are we talking about? Where are you located??For shipping cost estimates. Do you have a guarantee in case the work does not come out right? Lenses are pretty expensive if something goes wrong. Are you liable for replacement?
THx!
Looks good!!!!
Some good questions.

The price is $75 plus shipping. Shipping next day is about $25 each way. I have done several VW Passat lights and it has cost $25 each time for USPS Next day which includes weekends.

I am located in NY and part of the guaranteed next day zone.

My guarantee is that I will have the lights done right before I send them back to you. If there is a problem with them I will redo them for you. The tint spray will not ruin your lights. In other words this is not a one way ticket. I have redone my lenses on my Passat a few times already while I was learning how to do it. And I use some chemicals to remove the tint. The light can be restored to the original if need be. The only way the light would need to be replaced is if it is damaged during shipping and that is why I use USPS because they have insurance included with the shipping.

I hope I answered your questions.

That would be very interesting to see an IS300 with smoked out tails like that.....Might be a cool thing to get done. Hmmmmm, I would volunteer to be the first but I dont know bout that. SOmeone go before me! Then i'll be second? lol

And btw...how would my rear hyperwhite blinkers look under the tint when they are going? Still be the same light output with hyperwhites or less?
The light output would be diminished by 5-10%. It doesn't matter what kind of bulbs you are using they will still light up the same color.

Jon
What still illegal, the hyperwhites??

This looks like VHT ”Nite Shades” from summit racing that cost 6.99 a can. I did the taillights and front signals on 2 cars plus the side markers on the 99 VW Passat I traded in for my IS300. One thing to remember is your lights will no longer reflect light. This would be bad if you park your car on the side of a dark road. I would leave the taillights alone on a IS but the two inner round ones would be cool, I would stay a way from tinting them so much that they have that 80’s black out kit look.
I don't use that stuff. The stuff I use is more money per can and is of high quality. I disagree that they do not reflect. I feel they do. And the level of tint can be varied based on what you want. Some people like black out others like a subtle tint. It's up to you.

Jon
If what you say is true regarding the level of tint you apply then I might be in. I have always been a huge fan of the german tinted tail lights like the ones that Hella makes.
I would want a smoked look, something you can still see through but not clear.

Another question is how long does the tinting last. Do you ever have to have it reapplied?
Will it scratch off easily? Just curious how durable it is from normal wear and tear.

Thank for offering your services and answering our questions. I know there are many of us IS owners who are tired of the clear lens look.

I have had the tint on my ligths for over 3 months now. So far not one scratch, chip, peel. Nothing. They looks as good as day one. I don't know hwo long they will last. But it looks like they should last a long time. They can reapplied though if need be. And the level of tint is however much you want it to be.

Thanks again

Jon
I think a smoked tint on the IS tails would look best. Might actually give a similar effect like the smoked housing. Where in NY are you? I got a slightly craked tail light you can experiment on if you want.
JonBoy-
Habib here. Here is one thing I wanna make sure you are clear about. <-- No Pun Intended!

When you take apart the clear lenses to "tint" it, it's not that simple. I am not sure how other lights on other cars are done, but I know from taking apart my OEM foglights, that Lexus uses some type of really strong and water-resistant glue, that not only assists in securing the peices together, but it also prevents any water from getting in the light and then causing a small dew or bubbles appering on the lense.
The thing about it is, that it was kinda hard putting the foglight together and getting the glue back in its position. Every time I do a car wash, sometimes water gets into the foglight, and takes a lil while to get it to evaporate. That is with the foglights turned on.
So the point is that even if the seal isn't water-tight, the brake lights don't stay on for long enough nor get warm enough to help evaporate the water.
How do you plan on overcomming this obstacle presented?
Another question, how long does it take?
Any discount price for the first IS300 to take up your offer? If so, I'm in! Thanks!

Habib, I think that the tinting process, and correct me if I am wrong JonBoy, is done on the outside of the taillight housing. Therefore there is no need to disassemble the housing. At least that is my understanding.
I am curious too as to the turn around time. I really can't do too long w/o my car.
LL- oh...that would make sense, but to do that for 75 bucks is pretty steep i think... i guess all that typing was useless and didn't make look as smart as i thought it would!!
haha! but either way yah need to know turn over time please! thanks again

The tinting is done on the outside of the taillight. I do not take the lights apart at all.

The regular price is $75 for the lights but the first person who wants it will get it for $60. I want to get a Lexus's light so everyone else can see how it will look. I know people are hesitant because they are not sure how it would look. But this is a custom mod that will set your car apart from other IS300's.

As far as turn around time, if shipping next day for both trips, turn around time is 3 days. EX: you send me the lights on Tuesday, I receive them on Wenesday, I tint that them that day, then send them back on Thursday, you have them on Friday by noon on average.

As far as my regular price of $75, I feel it is a fair price. You may think it is a simple job to do but it takes hours for each set of lights. And I am a perfectionist. So I make sure that the prep work is done right. I want to make you guys happy.

BTW I live in Staten Island.
