Ride,
Check out www.tintdude.com

He has a lot of info on tint. I haven't tinted my car but was looking into it. Llumar is very popular, as is Solarguard and 3M. Ti may screw up radar detector and radio reception but no one on this board has complained of those complications.

Prices seem to vary by region - sunny areas (CA/FL) charge less, like 150-175, Northern areas are around 250.

Make sure they do the rear glass with one piece - no seams.

The reason you're not getting alot of response on this topic is because it's been covered so much in the recent past. Do a search for "tint" and you'll see what I mean.

For the record, I used 3M tint when I did mine a couple months ago. The installer said the 3M type was called "panther"...it doesn't black out the car but gives it a real classy look. Cost me $188 in Miami.

Good luck.

At my shop, in Santa Barbara Ca, for most 2 door cars, back 3 windows only, we charge $85 , 4 door cars, back half $95, vans & SUVs are $125. I wish we could raise our prices, but there are a couple of hack shops that lowball on the prices and the quality, even tho we do much better work, we must compete. As far as demanding one piece work on the rear window, Thats not allways the best option, depending on the car. In fact, most of my rear windows are in 2 pieces, with an invisible seam. It is NOT possible to get a clean install in one piece on alot of cars. It is best left to the descresion of the artist who is going to do the work. There is nothing more insulting than to have someone tell me how I am going to tint thier window. Think about it. Anyway, metalized film may indeed interfere with your antenna, and it will soon start to demetalize and eventually become clear. There are some pics of metalized film that faded to almost clear within a couple of years. Thay don't have them down well yet. Also nothing lasts forever in sunlight, your paint wont, so dont expect your tint to either. Metalized films will fail in about 2 years, Dyed poly films will turn purple in about 5 years. Oh by the way LLumar is th bottom of the barrel, Johnson is not far behind. Solargard has decent dyed poly, but dont trust thier metalized. Good Luck!

Hey tintdude,
I'm looking for a good tint place in southern California that uses 3M or some good quality tint. I live in Orange County (Irvine) and Santa Barbara is kinda far....could you recommend any other good shops? What kind of tint does your shop use? I can't find anywhere in So Cal that uses 3M..

When i first started to tint, we were using 3m dyed poly. I havent used in in about 10 years, so I can't speak to the quality. Most shops wont use it because of the high price. A comparable film would be SolarGard, it is more reasonably priced for the installer. I dont know anything about orange county tint shops, your bets bet would be to ask the car dealerships who they use. They like reliable, consistant, long term shops.
