To keep with my chart theme I already have going, I'm starting a new series of flow charts :D Because I own a MT IS with F/I, I made the below chart to target the MT owners (insert a bit of humor when reading). I am sure many folks will have a different opinion than I do regarding the rwhp cut off points and reccomendations I listed. This is to be used as a general guideline. There is always that one exception. However, I don't think 1 or 2 exceptions fairly depict the big picture.

If I was looking into F/I, I would want a general idea of upgrades might be involved. Here they are for a MT...

Steevo,

You should add in there the other types of needed upgrades for the higher hp....like wider tires, brakes, suspension, etc. (things that don't come with the tuner's kits) Some people dont think about those things, who really wants to spend their time spinning tires through gears 1-3...

Tires - Driving around on high performance race compound tires (+1 size) vs a stock size $75 cheapo tire...plays a big part in traction. Things such as our internals, are all on an equal level. Thus, making a general chart such as the one I posted more accurate.

Brakes - At what rwhp level do you upgrade the brakes? Stock brakes are good at 275, but are lacking at 325? See....it's tough to make such a call.

Suspension - ????

I think all 3 of the specific points you mentioned are good points and need to be figured into every persons F/I equation. There is just no way to relate it to rwhp. Oh well... :)

Oh yea...if you answered "NO"...

Please share your thoughts. This way I might be able to add or change it to make this better for folks to use as a general guide. This chart is not for me. I did it to help out others.

There is no right or wrong answer.

I will do an AT one. But, since I am not fimiliar with the AT world, I will need folks to submit thoughts. Can you PM me with "at what point you need to add a shift kit and/or tranny upgrade and the rwhp that corresponds"? Heck..I do not even know what part of the tranny needs upgrading

good job redline. props. not many of us have the time to do what you did, or just to lazy(i for example). it really helps the noobies out there who haven't been here as long and isn't aware of what f/i can do to the car. but for those of us who been here for a while already have a "chart" imprinted in our heads.

Updated 09-FEB-04

I added information regarding tire and traction issues. I based this on my own experience and the feedback I have read or discussed with other F/I owners. Once I buy new wider rims/tires, I will be able to update the options that branch off of the tire box.

Again...
If the Auto guys want a similar flow chart, send me some info and I will gladly make one. As I do not have an auto, I cannot make one that is even 1/2 way accurate (I never keep up with the auto issues).

This is the coolest thread ever! I send you all my imaginary dots!

The 400+ rwhp "swap the transmission --> No --> The End" had me LOL.

I find the stock brakes LACKING at 275.
That or I need to slow down :-?
In my opinion its always better to be able to stop faster than you accellerate... the brakes were the #1 upgrade after FI.
