If that doesn't sum up the reason I bought
the IS300, I don't know what does. This
comes from the October 2000 edition of
Car and Driver.

I looked at the Acura 3.2TL and BMW 328.
The Acura was mundane in feel, your
average everyday family car with
acceleration if you will; while the
BMW is a prolific as oxygen, a testament
to its build quality no doubt -- but still
a negative for me.

Different to a fault, I bought the IS300
because it was just that -- different
than anything I had ever seen before (and
don't come forth with riced-up car
comparisons either). Apparently, everyone
else thinks this car is different as well.

Just about every performance oriented car
(and even those that aren't so inclined)
and their over-enthusiastic driver, wants
to race me in my IS300. I could give a
sh*t to be honest. In the past three days
(I've had mine for a week), I've had a
Acura Vigor, BMW M3, BMW M5, Porsche
Boxster, Mercedes CLK320, Mitsubishi
Eclipse (RS!!), and Dodge Avenger go
flat out -- in traffic, on small access
roads, flat out on I-85, anywhere
conceivable -- and try to smoke the IS300.

And here's where it gets boring -- I don't
try to race them. I just watch, and laugh.
Is it curiousity? Jealously? Envy? Whatever
the case, it's amusing.

All I can say is TRD better come out with
a non warranty voiding supercharger add-on
soon. I'm getting itchy trigger foot.

Note: most of those cars above can soundly
trounce the IS, with the exception of the
latter two. That's the fascinating part
of this. I suppose since guys can't walk
around with their Johnson hanging out, they
have to prove their worth by their toys --
and the speed in a straight line, therein.

i think some of the guys in those cars know that some of the IS300 owners think they're the sh*t...so they try to show them what's up

Don, Nice job in summarizing why the IS is an attractive addition to the sport sedan marketplace.

That's also why I don't understand all of the flame bait re: CL-S, Corvette convertibles, TLs, Bimmers, Audis, etc, being faster. That's what S/Cs and turbos are for.

I'm not one to fall for marketing jargon - but *radical* it is (in a classy sort of way).

Yeah, and if I could get a Bentley Arnage for the same price as a Kia Rio, I would've taken it.

My S2000 arrives in 16 days. After the break-in period, I'm gonna hunt down you and your ugly ass vette.

Talk about flame bait. Why the title?

I saw my first "lowered" IS300 on the way home from work yesterday on 280 north by Wolfe Rd. (he exited there). He got to go in the carpool lane (I hate that especially when I am alone).

There really is a different look to these cars than the 3 series. It is a bit more "import" looking, especially lowered. So different strokes for different folks. Can't see some 38 year old female attorney in the IS.

I won't waste my gas racing one unless the other guy wants to have some fun. Maybe Lexus commercials account for the challenges by much faster cars.

The topic title came from the title of
the Car and Driver review. Pretty simple.
I don't do flame bait.

I too was averse to buying a BMW...in fact I never even considered them. I was looking at A4s, CL-SType, TL (but found it too run of the mill for me) and the IS.

I went with the IS for styling, Lexus quality/name, performance, standard items, fun and comfort.

Not trying to piss anyone off, but that was my thinking...I just don't dig BMWs that much. The M series are cool but I didn't want to drop that much.
