15099Just when it seemed that the Lexus IS F racer and Racing Concept stories couldn't get any more dubious and suspect than <A HREF="http://www.worldcarfans.com/9080108.007/team-lexus-is-f-to-enter-gt2-le-mans-series">the WorldCarFans report of a return to American Le Mans series racing</A> and the <A HREF="http://news.windingroad.com/aftermarket/japan-report-lexus-is-f-racing-concept/">Winding Road report of a mid-engined, detuned-to-300-hp IS F Super GT300 racer</A>, German website <A HREF="http://www.autobild.de/artikel/deutsche-tourenwagen-masters_523057.html">AutoBild has posted an account</A> that, if correctly translated by Autoblog reader Georg, is hands down the most laughably ridiculous of them all. Here's the story by Autoblog's Jonathon Ramsey:

Lexus IS-F racer actually a 2004 Opel Vectra DTM car?
Remember that luscious Lexus IS-F racer study that received its fair share of unrequited attention the Tokyo Auto Salon? According to AutoBild, it turns out the car isn't an IS-F racer at all -- well, at least not beyond the hood and fact that it has four doors. The German paper reports that the car is actually a Lexus reskin of a 2004 Opel Vectra DTM racer (above, top). Even the engine is from the Opel DTM car, and not a Toyota V8. This could explain why no one at the Lexus stand at the salon would say a word about the car.

So Lexus might get away with never claiming it was a Lexus... cough, cough... but it's a bit odd that they would let Winding Road get the idea that it's the pet project of the IS-F's chief engineer, designed to show the true potential of Lexus' hot sedan and "something of what a full race IS-F might just feel like." Perhaps what a full-race IS-F might look like. Unless Lexus really intends for a full-race IS-F to feel like a 4-year-old Opel.

A special IS F edition of the Weekly World News?
At the rate these stories are going, we could certainly write one for the trashiest of the tabloids. This story, quite frankly, seems more worthy of AutoSpies than Autoblog. Fortunately, <A HREF="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/21/lexus-is-f-racer-actually-a-2004-opel-vectra-dtm-car/">the original Autoblog story</A> includes enough intelligent post-story commentary from member SoloTwo, plus not just <A HREF="http://www.speedarena.com/gallery/albums//Touring%20Cars/DTM/2004/01%20Pre%20Season/005.jpg">one</A> or <A HREF="http://www.speedarena.com/gallery/albums//Touring%20Cars/DTM/2004/01%20Pre%20Season/006.jpg">two</A>, but <A HREF="http://www.speedarena.com/gallery/albums//Touring%20Cars/DTM/2004/01%20Pre%20Season/007.jpg">three</A> pictures of the 2004 Opel Vectra DTM car to refute this whole ridiculous story.

Is there any truth to this at all? The BILD is a tabloid newspaper. I know of them because they are always saying random "crap" about F1 news. They are hardly ever correct.
