sounds to me like they (TRD) are having second thoughts and spoke too soon, maybe they don't want to release a supercharger without warranty under kazuma because then they would not sell as many units, since most ppl who buy TRD are buying for the warranty as much as anything else...sounds like they are laying a foundation of excuses so they dont have to spend the $$ on R&D and then not make a profit selling unbacked products...

I've only being in one supercharged car, and that is the C230 Kompressor of my brother. If all supercharger sounded like that, especially the TRD one, then no way in hell am I buying that thing, even if it give me over 300hp. I like the quietness of the car, and this is what most Lexus buyers like. One advantage Lexus car (except the IS I think) has over any of its competitors is that its cars are always quieter, and I like that.
true, to a point. tell me when driving the IS you don't turn the stereo off and roll down the windows to hear that sweet exaust or the smooth I6... i wouldnt really mind if the supercharger made a little noise, i want to hear those extra ponies...i usually have my stereo all the way up so i can care either way.
I guess you haven't heard the supercharger in those C230 engines. They sounded like a diesel car, very very loud. If it is a sound like turbo, then I don't mind since the only annoy part is that little whine you hear when you don't have other noise. Supercharger on the other hand, usually generate more noise than turbo, so I am more reluctant to go into it. Plus the fact that they are harder to tune then turbo. With a turbo system, I can just throw in my EVC IV I have sitting in my room and go to higher boost by just a click of the bottom, whereas with Supercharger you will have to change pulley and other mechanical parts.
you totally lost me, i dont know much about turbo and supercharger setups, so i can only imagine. i know the basics, kinda, how they are supposed to work, but their inner workings and components are a whole new subject matter, i'll go test drive one of my cousin or uncles C Kompressors later and try to understand what you mean.
Well, I drove my Supercharged MR2 daily for the past 6 years before getting the IS300. The supercharger "whine" didn't bother me at all even though it was right behind my head
(mid engined car).
I even put a different pulley on the increased boost (and whine).
Basically a supercharger is a belt driven "air squisher" the pumps air into the engine.
A turbo is an exhaust driven fan that blows air into the engine.
Superchargers make a uniform growl that changes pitch with engine speed.
Turbos make a whoosh/whistle noise that varies more with throttle position than with engine speed.
I would gladly trade a little more noise for 50-100 more HP...

As far as turbo and supercharger goes, here is some basic. Turbocharger contains a compressor and a turbine, the turbine is driven by the exhaust flow and in term spins the compressor (like a turbojet). The speed the compressor/turbine spins dictates how much boost you are inputing into your engine, so by controlling the amount of exhaust used to spin the turbine can essentially control the speed of the compressor which controls the boost. The wastegate is used to regulate how much exhaust is used to spin the turbine, and with a boost controller such as EVC IV, it will trick the wastegate into allowing more flow to the turbine (I am not going to go into the detail on how boost controller works), therefore more boost with a touch of a button.
On the other hand, a supercharger is driven by a pulley system connecting to your crank. To increase boost you need to increase the speed of the compressor, and to do that you will need to the pulley on your supercharger so it will get more rpm per crank rpm. Unless someone develops a variable pulley system, like VVTI-L or VTECH, there will be no way to change the boost of the supercharger by pushing a few buttons inside your ****pit.

I have never driven a supercharged car, but I liked the whine of the turbo in my last car. (An old Supra GA70 with 2L 1G-FE). That whining sound from the turbine made the car feel a lot faster and the blow off valve gave a nice accent.

Daniel, it's not the supercharger that gives it a bad note, it's the 2.3 four banger with a terrible sounding exhaust. It has NOTHING to do with the supercharger whine. In fact, the sc tends to disguise the awful sounding four, if anything.

thanks for clearing that up. I am pretty surprise that MB didn't do anything to make that engine sound better, it is just awful noise.
Hopefully TRD uses something that will keep the supercharger quieter if they do ever decide to sell one. If that is the case, then I may think about getting one.

I only had the chance to drive 2 supercharged cars - Bonneville SSEi and Mercedes SLK. The Bonneville's engine was smooth and quiet whereas the SLK's engine reminded me of a honda riding mower that my parent's once owned.

Try this, put just the back windows down about half way. Drive about 30mph or so. If your brains haven't been sucked out of your head afterwards, post here.

Tony, been there done that...kinda like that celica commercial where dude sticks his head out the window and comes back bald...thats why its all 4 windows down when i cruise and all 4 up on the highway...the middle seatbelt flapping does get annoying though.
To eleviate the cabin pressure, what I do is roll down the window on the opposite side about an inch. It works for me.Originally posted by webmaster:

Funny - that just happened to me too today (before reading this topic). I rolled my back windows down at 40MPH and felt like someone was boxing my ears from behind.
I got the same effect with some combo of part open sunroof, and front windows.
