My belt has 83k miles on it with no such cracks. This does not seem normal to me at all. You didn't happen to get an aftermarket timing belt by chance?????

Completely normal. I have looked at 3x belts...one with 65k, 40k, and brand new. All like that. The belt has a woven type of construction with threads underneath.
