I know this is a naive or stupid question, but how does it work? If I arm the alarm, my key should not be able to start the engine right?
I'm asking because last night I was sitting in my millenium silver with my girl and the alarm armed (had the engine off). I didn't realize this and started the car and drove off. All of a sudden in the middle of the friggin street the alarm starts blazing while I'm driving. I had to pull over, stop the engine, disarm and restart the engine again.

Is this supposed to work this way? Is my engine immobilizer not working correctly?

Check your manual.. there's a sequence you can peform to test your alarm and engine immobilizer. Good Luck. I never go anywhere shady with my IS

We are talking about stock alarm?
When you insert your key into ignition and turn it, alarm deactivates automatically. The way the immobilizer works, it authenticates the coil inside your key when you start the car. It does nothing afterwards.

Only people in the computer business uses the word "authenticate" ...hehehee
