I've done a search in the forums for people trying to eliminate rattles/squeaks. One guy said he used felt in between plastic parts. Is this a good idea? I've got 36k on my IS, with the squeak and glove box rattle starting only a few months ago. If I were to add some felt, I really don't have any idea on how to get into the squeak location or glove box rattle. Please advise!

Does anyone have any ideas as to where to begin? I would LOVE to get this rattle and squeak taken care of. Squeaks piss me off! :pissed:

Here is the image with the trouble spots.

Thanks guys/gals.

Is your seat belt squeaking? It is a common problem on 2001.

You can take the glove box completely out and drive around. That might tell you something. There are just two plastic pins on the hinge. Pull them all the way back and the whle golve box pops right out.

One more thing,
the glove box squeak, does it change with the fan speed? I used to have a squeak in the air system. Also, did you change your air filter behind the glove box yet?

I can place my hand directly ON the glove box and push it in a bit, which seems to make the rattle go away, so I'm pretty sure it's the glove box. I wonder, is there something in there that needs to be tightened?

As for the squeak, I can push in a bit on the plate just behind the turn signal and it seems to get rid of the squeak.

Should I try taking it apart/tightening/installing felt?
Of course, that makes me nervous. :-?

Where on the glove box?
I wonder if it is the locking mechanism. You can apply some WD40 to it.

Take apart the steering wheel assembly cover.
It is very simple. There are 2 screws behind the steering wheel (you need to turn it). I think it just snaps apart afterwards. Check for screws on the bottom. It has been a few years, so I don't remember off-hand.

For the Glovebox squeak, there should be little rubber "feet" that go between the glove box door and the dash.... you might want to try replacing those before you do any felt additions. Also make sure that its not coming from anything thats actually inside the glove box. sometimes I put a bunch of crap in there and it makes all kinds of noise.

For the part thats near the steering wheel... there have been a bunch of posts about the glass over the speedo making noise. I don't remember what the solution is, but you can look around for posts on that.

hope that helps.

not tryin to hijack the thread or anything, but i have what sounds like a small marble rolling around in my center a/c vents up front. i haven't actually put my ear to the vent but by driving the car and sitting the the different passenger seats that's where it seems to come from. It gets really annoying and happens when i gas, brake, turn left or right. Anyone have this prob? thanks guys :)

You may want to try taking apart your vent system and making sure there are no debris inside. Some car disassembly is required.
