Only had my 2001 for a week and the VIN# is after the cutoff for the ECU upgrade. I noticed that if I don't step on the gas there is a hesitation between first and second gears. I hit the gas - car accellerates for 1 second (first gear very short) then there is a slight hesitation while shifting to second. The other gears do not have this hesitation. Is this normal?

Your best bet is bring the car back to the dealer and have them check it for you. From time to time, I have seen people still have their car ECU reflash/update even their VIN number is not on the update list.
As far as my car go, it never done anything like that.....
