1SL, this particular gasket is the metallic type (non-paper) so there wasn't anything to scrape. When I separated the two parts the gasket was just dangling still in pretty good shape. I bought a new one so I just used that and tossed the old one out. Another member on the "Timing Belt & Water Pump" DIY thread suggested I use a gasket maker and I did. So far, the seal looks really good so I think this problem has been resolved. I need to add coolant tonight to test it out. I'll post the results tomorrow..Thanks,
