When i start the car i hear a grinding sound. Kinda like the sound a truck makes. It happens only sometimes when the car is left to cool down for awhile but when the car is already warm it does not make that sound. Could it be the timing chain is off alignment or something? any help would be good thanks. the car has about 131 000 km on it and its a 2006

Speaking of grind-like sound from the engine I think that's normal for the IS350. My brand new IS350 back in 2008 did the same thing when I owned one. We had a few threads discussed about this. It isn't really a problem but can be remedied by taking it to the dealer. I think it's one of the TSIB's? Anyways, it won't hurt the car in any way or performance.

yup, there's a TSIB for it, free fix under warranty but the dealer has to hear the noise for it to be covered. At 131,000 km you're probably out of luck for that.

It's related to cam gear... but the dealer has to hear the sound before they start any warranty work, at least in Canada here.

Good Luck!

Ok i have did a lot of research. These guys have the same sound my car makes. Only difference is they are getting that sound on the cold startup. Mine only happens on a warm startup. I have timed it at it only happens 15 mins after the car is turned off after the engine is hot. So basically on a cold start it starts fine, on a hot start it starts fine, on a warm start were the engine is left to be cooled for 15 mins or more it makes that sound. I have a cold air intake intalled and the problem seemed to have happened after the intake was installed. Could this be a sign of heat soak?

This is weird because I get it at all different times.

I would like to make a update here. I switched to 0w-20 ams oil from 5w-30. About 1500kms later i noticed the grinding sounds at start up have gone. I recall reading that some other guy had the same problem and when he changed to 0w-30 the problem fixed itself after some time. I'm really happy about all of this and will continue to use 0w-30.
