I'm actually looking at that very monitor right now on my desk at work. It's very nice. The picture is sharper and brighter than the 21" Dell I had before. (Yes, I dropped to a 19" - I felt guilty because I also have a 17" SGI LCD
)

I have an M990. Whats the diff between P990 and M990. This M990 seems to kick butt, except that about one minute after coming out of powerdown mode, it makes a loud click (sounds like an electrical arc) the entire screen unfocuses briefly.

I have a 17" Dell Ultrascan (Sony Trinitron), and it's great, same as the Sony - Dell's are a little cheaper, but usually have to buy a PC with it. Sony Trinitrons (and Dells) are the best monitors on the market, IMO.

those are damper wires, and they support the aperture grill -- all trinitrons have them.

i'm just sold my entire old system -- including my awesome dell p990 monitor -- and got a new one. after looking at several monitors -- viewsonic e790b, viewsonic pf790 -- i want the dell's crispness and contrast back, so i ordered a p991 (in black!) from dell. just wondered how it looked....

Not all flatscreens have those horizontal black lines...

Those lines are in Trinitron monitors
(basically a Sony technology now licensed to other manufacturers).

Those wires are needed in trinitron because they have the trinitron "one gun" technology that uses a vertical stripe mask (instead of a triad mask like 3 gun monitors). When you look at Trinitrons they have a seemless vertical opening for each color (you might need a magnifying glass to see). Those horizonal lines are actually very thin wires used to hold the shadow mask in place. Since a typical 3 gun monitor just has a triad of "holes" the shadow mask is very stable, but the trinitron shadow mask is more like "venetian blinds" (on its side) so it needs the extra support to stay aligned. (Look at some venetian blinds sometime - they have little cords holding _them_ together).

Depending on the size of the trinitron tube they use more or less horizontal wires. For instance, less than 15" typically only needs one support wire, but 19" and greater need at least two.

Tony - I envy your SGI LCD. That is sweet.

I like Viewsonic monitors for the good quality at a decent price (value).

I have a 1920x1440 P815 on my desk at work.

hitachis are nice -- i've seen the very monitor you're talking about, i believe -- but for some reason, i don't find anything equivalent to the dell trinitrons. i just bought a viewsonic pf790 and am taking it back, and it's a trinitron tube. something about dell's aperture grille is better than most -- my old dell p990 still looks better than 95% of the monitors out there.

plus, the p991 comes in black, which matches the rest of my home system.
