Hi all, so I just bought a 2001 IS300, everything for the most part is fine...BUT..it doesn't go into gear. I have park and neutral but no forward gears and no reverse. When I put it in gear it just revs and nothing happens..except the cel comes on. The code says speed sensor A. I replaced it but it still come up and it still doesn't move. I wish I knew who owned it before the guy I bought it from to get more info about the history of it. But I would appreciate it if someone on here would possibly be able to give me a hand. I absolutely love the IS so I really want to get her running.

What happens when you put it in 2L or L? Does Eshift work? If no to both of them then I would say you most likely have a mechanical issue with either your shift solenoids(which would usually throw a code) or maybe torque converter and I would most likely seek a transmission shop that's reputable and deals with our A650E. One of my main questions was fluid level too, just to be clear, are you checking it when you should in park/in idle? Testing it off will give different results.

Sorry for the late response, I put new fluid in, its the correct amount and type as well. In regards to what jasonm4 said, putting it in 2l or l does the same thing. I put it in any forward gear or reverse it just does nothing. I can put it in drive or reverse and i can push it as if it is neutral. Also there are no codes in regards to the shift solenoids.

When you changed fluids did you just dump it out the pan, or do a proper flush from the hose?

I'm no expert on trannys but was just thinking if from the hose then you know the pump is working, then I would doubt it is a torque converter issue as they typically wear creating more slip. If not then as mentioned would be time to look at the solenoids, I assume they have rubber seals or diaphragms that might need replacing, maybe even a broken spring behind it. Not sure about the fluid pump itself though.

Is the ECU throwing any other codes?
Did you do an ECU reset after changing the sensor to see if it clears and shows a different code?

I assume you are using a proper code reader an not the pin jump to find the codes and errors right?

I drained it from the pan and then refilled it. The only other code that I get is for my front driver wheel abs, but that is because the sensor is bad but I should be able to go into gear. Also my trac light is flashing even after i clear the code (p0500 speed sensor) using my scan tool. I am tempted to get a new trans which is doable but I want to make sure that is what the problem is before I spend the money.

im not an expert with our automatic transmission as i have a manual. My suggestion would be to set your ebrake and have someone switch between all the gears and look at your transmission linkage or solenoid to see if it is moving/actuating. typically transmissions dont just go out, they give you warning. My money would be on the linkage or actuator. Hope this helps and good luck

The linkage is fine and I don't have any codes about the solenoids or anything pertaining to the transmission. The guy I bought it from said he was driving along and all of a sudden the car shut off. He pulled over it started back up but it wouldn't go into gear.

Sounds to me like an electrical problem, not the actual transmission. You might need to break down and take it to a transmission shop. Most shops will diagnose it, give you a quote, and let you know whats wrong for not too much money. once you know whats wrong you might be able to fix it yourself and save some $$$$

What are your current active and pending DTC's? The transmission is pretty sensitive when it comes to the solenoids so if the output shaft is not reading what it should then it may be a mechanical issue. May be an issue with your lock solenoid(mechanically).

You have upshift and downshift solenoids that engage when one of the four gear solenoids engage. It's all done by solenoids and gears as well as the torque convertor. A problem with one of them will usually throw a CEL.

If it was electrical or it detected a fault I would think it would throw a CEL. Since the linkage is fine I'm wondering if your transmission is even trying to engage. You have scanned the car, even with the CEL off(pending dtc's won't always illuminate the CEL)?

Yeah I scanned it and nothing about the solenoids came up. I do notice that when I put it in gear it doesn't click or shift or give any type of sign that it is engaging a gear. It's just quiet. Do you think it might be the trans or the torque converter?

I think I mentioned this before, I replaced the speed sensor on the rear of the trans. If I put the car in gear and rev the motor to 5000 rpms the cel comes on and it is p0500, which is the vehicle speed sensor.

So car starts fine? idles fine, you can push on the brake and then move the gear selecter into R N and D 321 and it still acts like its in park?? rev and no clunking or grinding or anything?
