There's 2 pairs of notches, with 3 inches between the pairs.

The lower notches towards the end of the dipstick is for the cold fluid level. The fluid level should be within the 1 inch of space between those 2 notches when the car is completely cooled down.

There is another pair of notches 3 inches above the cold level. This is the hot level, because the fluid expands and takes more volume when it's hot. This should be used when measuring fluid level when the car is up to temp (after driving normally for 10 minutes).
