Looks like I'm the latest casualty in a string of manual tranny problems.

My fourth gear started acting up about 1 mth ago when it decided to pop out of gear and grind on a casual 3rd-4th upshift. As of late, it's starting to do this more and more frequently. It seems to be most reproducible when downshifting 5th-4th. It's popped out on me a handful of times today. I'm right at 32k miles.

Wanted to get a role call of people who have had similar problems with their manual tranny as I know a few of you have posted about this, but wanted to see if any others have as well.

Also, please list any observations of the problem, mileage of car at the time of problems, and which dealer you went to and how they handled it.

I had mine replaced at Lexus of El Cajon.

They initially sent me on my way because they told me unless a tech could duplicate the problem then they couldn't do anything. So on my way home that very same day it does the pop-outta-4th downshifting from 5th. I call them up and tell them they can keep it for as long as it takes them to "verify" the problem. Anyhow the service guy tells me he just found out about the problem and to just bring it in.

Do me a favor please and ask them if they know what the problem is exactly and if they have found a fix. I think it's just a badly designed part that keeps failing and it's just cheaper for them to keep replacing these tranny's till we're all outta warranty. :pissed:

I have a similar problem but it does not pop out of gear. It does grind, however, everytime I shift from 3rd to 4th. I have about 35,000 miles on mine and it used to do it only in higher RPMs, but it seems like it is getting more frequent, and at lower RPMs than before. The last time I took it in for something else, they were not able to replicate the problem so since I will be going there sometime within the next week or so for something else, I will take them for another drive. The service advisor told me that he will be able to replace the whole transmission for me with a new one as long as I can do it for him so I guess that will be the outcome for me.

For the person that pointed had theirs replaced, how long did the dealer keep your car for?

Mine was in for over a month but it was because they had issues finding a replacement tranny. It was during those docks strikes on the west coast and luckily they found me one somewhere in the NW. I think your probably looking at a couple weeks though even if they find one relatively quickly.

I'm going to let the dealer know about it now but wait a couple more hundred miles to make sure I can reproduce the problem once I get to the dealer. Wonder if the dealer will bitch about the car being lowered, with SRT intake and exhaust.

Also, it seems to be a weak 4th gear synchro that's causing the issue in the trannies. I've read elsewhere that it started happening for people after they went on a long highway trip. I had just returned from a long 1200mile trip when the problem started happening. At first...the symptoms were a bit different....4th gear was harder to engage. Almost like the gate was locked out. Then a week after...it started the popping out and grinding. We'll see where it goes from here.

Thanks for all you guys that chimed in. Let us know your progress on this as well.

i never took my car on a long drive, also drive it very little , like 1 day a week

and mine broke, i just think its a defect that randomly happens.

if the dealer wants to be a dick, he can void your warranty

Just to follow up on this for you others that are having this issue.
Took car into Carlsbad Lexus last Wed. Told the service advisor about the problem and that is was most reproducable when downshifting from 5th to 4th at freeway speeds when the tranny is up to operating temp. Asked him if I can take a tech out to reproduce it for him, but he insisted that the dealer diagnostic specialist will take care of it. So left the car with them.

Get a call a few hours later and they agreed that it needed a new tranny. The specialist was able to reproduce the problem. They also supposedly opened a drain pan with a screen filter and were able to see that it there was something wrong? Maybe they could see metal debris??

But at any rate, they ordered these parts:

Complete New Transmission
Pressure Plate
Flywheel
Throw Out Bearing
Pilot Beaing
Clutch Disc

And said they should come in pretty quickly...by Friday.

So all went as they said it would, and tranny came in Friday. They had it completely swapped out and done by Monday afternoon. So I was happy to not be without the car for too long, although the new 2003 ES300 loaner I had was pretty plush and comfy for all the cruising I did that weekend.

The new clutch is sooo very smooth compared to my last one...engages like butter unlike the last one which shuddered a lot. Probably worn or warped flywheel or clutch plates. New tranny is very notchy. Needs to be broken in some.

The only gripe I have right now is that the clutch pedal seems way soft. I think they might now have bled it correctly.....but as of this morning, it seems to have gotten some of it's pressure/resistance back. I'll drive it a few more days and see how things go.

Can you reproduce the problem at will? I asked the service advisor if I could drive and show them the symptoms (in case they couldn't reproduce it and give me the runaround), and he said that it would be what they will do if the specialist could not reproduce the problem.

Know when it is most reproducible and tell them. In my case, it is when the tranny is up to operating temp, and downshifing 5th->4th at freeway speeds (60-80mph).

Lastly, tell them that you won't take it back until they find the problem.

TeCK did they say what caused the failure?
They did not give me a specific cause of failure. It was written on the reciept as an "internal transmission failure". With the symptoms the tranny has, I can only assume that it is a weak fourth gear synchro since it works great otherwise. It is also likely that the tranny fluid plays a good part in it. Whether it is due to the fluid breaking down or whatnot that aggravates the problem.

What mileage was the rest of you at when it started happening? It may be interesting to see the VIN numbers on the cars affected as well.

Lastly, I asked if the replacements trannies are refurbs like the replacements CD changers we get. I was told that on such a new car, it would definitely be a new unit and not a refurb. On an older car, they may consider using a refurb.

have them change the tranny fluid to inspect for damage. They changed mine and the problem has not come back since.
I did not want to give them the option, or the idea that they could just change the fluid on mine.... since everytime it pops out...it grinds pretty badly. Can only imagine the aggravated wear this has caused to the tranny.

Also, from talking to the service advisor, it seemed that they did go to inspect the fluid and upon opening draining/opening the tranny, immediately decided that it would need a replacement. Don't exactly know what they saw to indicate this though.

Just wanted to update everyone on my transmission issue also. I spoke to Keyes Lexus on Friday, 8/1/2003, and they said they were going to order another transmission for me because they will take my word for it that it is grinding. He told me that it would take a couple of days. Today, they called me and had me drop my car off. The new transmission should be in the car within a few days.
