Has anyone removed the dust collector and inserted a DVD/nav system in? I know there was a thread earlier about it, but I mean a factory (or equivilent) version. I know that it will be an option for the 2002, so if anyone has spoken to a dealer about pricing etc, please let me know?

Exactly what I expected you to put up there. Don't forget to leave some space for the black lights.

spectrablue: thanks for the post...saves me some time...heheheh!

lstyleis: gotta any pics?? i wanna see!

s0yb0mb: i've asked the dealers about this and they probably won't put the nav system in the 2001's...they don't like doing that sort of stuff unless it's already factory installed! so if you want the factory version of the nav system you'll have to get a 02 model!

How well does it work for you? Can you see/read the display from your normal driving position? I was thinking about getting one, but I was worried the screen was a little small.

[From TEG: I like it - the main thing I use is the "next cross-street" display along the top. In general I don't use the GPS very much... Only if I manage to get myself lost.]

No - DVD means that you put DVD disks (high capacity CDs) into the unit.

GPS means that it gets position location from Satellite.

Lexus said that the IS300 will have a "DVD based NAV" meaning that it has one DVD disk that has maps of the whole country for the GPS to use. It ~may~ also mean that you can put in a DVD movie disk and watch it on the display if the car is not moving. (but that feature is not official on the IS300 yet).

My GPS uses memory cards that don't hold very much (compared to DVDs) so I can only have detailed roads for my local area. (and then a major highway map for the rest of the country).

You can buy a car DVD player that will play DVD movies but doesn't have a GPS at all.

Also, the best (most expensive) GPS systems also have an intertial (direction) sensor and a connection to the speedo so that they can track your position even if you are in a tunnel or in an area where the GPS signal gets lost.

SpectraBlueIS300: i don't think i'll be coming back to MD with my car! i was there back in december but i didn't have my car with me. but if i ever do bring it back i'll defintately let you take a look at it. or if you're ever in the bay area i can show it to you!

currently the lexus LX 470 has the capability of playing dvd's while the car is parked! hopefully they'll be able to put that in the IS when it comes out!

the current alpine dvd-rom nav system has VSS (variable speed sensor) so it can track you in tunnels like teg mentioned! it's a pretty neat feature!

They're mounting Boost, exhaust gas, and air/fuel meter. I guess this is rice because it doesn't make me go faster...even though it's for the turbo.

One nice thing is that the backlight (orange) matches the IS300 dashboard lighting.
TEG thats a good deal u have there. I think thats the smart way to go. You dont have to blow all your money on the bigger systems. VERY SMART
