This is an email from JetChip.com
I inquiried about upgrade for the IS300 and they came with this
_____________________________________________

the part number would be 65002 and it does require that the factory ecu
be sent to us for programing. For further assistance, contact us at
800-535-1161.

---------------------------------------------
The upgrade package would retail for $399.00. It is not emisions legal in Ca.
Average gains are 14-16 hp and 18-20 ft lbs of torque. For further assistance,
contact us at 800-535-1161.

well......if you read all the other reviews of all the other intakes (RMM, 5Zigen,Ect..)
they have no gain of HP at all(possibly even degrade performance)

So im not surprised by this....

as MO said....the intake must be used with the ECU....MUST.....otherwise its useless..

So i can see a computer giving the 15HP..
But the sound from the intake from SRT is well worth the additional 200.00 from the 399.99 Chip from jetchip...

Just my .02

El Chino,
Give them a call and make sure they do offer it, I know for a fact that the Lexus ECU cannot be hacked. Ask for solid proof of dyno charts and customer reviews, also remember you will be making a permanent modification to your ECU and it is not emissions legal in CA, and your car will be down for a minimum of 3 days.

IMHO it does not exist, and past experience with JET chips left a bad taste in my mouth. Their chips for the diamond star cars only made about 2-3 RWHP.

I just spoke w/JET this morning (1/18/00) and they stated that they could upgrade the chip in the IS.

There would be a little down time for the car.

My concern w/the SRT intake is the add'l noise coming from the engine bay. It's the wife's car and she wants it to drive and sound like a Lexus. I guess she wants a fairly quiet engine.

The JET chip w/the stock air intake would probably solve the noise issue, but now Mo tells me that the chip will only produce 2-3 rwhp. Now I'm facing a real tough choice.

Is anyone in the same position; JET chip v. SRT intake.

Does anyone agree with this statemnt: "The design compromises and resulting performance weakness, on the IS engine lie in the exhaust side of the equation and not on the intake side. This is not my opinion, but was told to me by someone else.

just to let you know, i think someone here said something like a Dinan chip they were considering (that was suppose to make like 15hp) actually made NONE in a real world dyno test. I would beware w/ "chips" if i were you... esp. since the IS is already using 91 octane gas...

i've had bad experiences with jet in the past. we tried several of them with no improvements...

and mo says the computer cannot be hacked...well, i don't know how true this statement is. the ecu on the IS should be "somewhat" similar to other toyota ecu's...ex: gs3, supra, sc3...and i know that the supra ecu can be modified...g-force, uprd and XS engineering already did that...

i'm not going to say that it "can" be done...so sorry mo, if it sounds like i'm contradicting you...but i don't know if i'd go so far as to say that it "can't" be done...i'm just saying..."maybe"...

i doubt jet will do it tho...

mo, i don't know enough about the ecu myself...but have you tired to "hack" it yet??? also, have you modified the one in your car yet???

HyperMKIV: The chips were reprogrammable uptil 1997. After the 1998 model year was introduced Lexus started using the onetime flash chips. This was verified by Lexus with the computer code upgrade done for some 1998 GS400 cars, they simply sent a new ecu module and the Lexus service guys simply tossed out the old one (I got my hands on a few this way), we tried to hack it but it was next to impossible, with encrypted code and proprietary hardware and software.

El Chino: Who me worry? Nah
Just trying to keep up with the HFI orders, been really busy.
