The two old fog mod threads either had small pictures or no pictures. So I merged the two threads and created this one. Thought it would be helpful to the legion of new 1st gen IS owners out there and the ones that will join in the future.

Credit goes to tony and irv_usc for their original threads:

http://my.is/forums/f53/how-stand-alone-fog-lights-mod-106666/
http://my.is/forums/f90/how-alternate-fog-lights-mod-method-199809/
==========================================================

Pros and Cons to this method over the original:

Pros:

1. The Fog Mod circuit is independent of the ignition circuit. If crap were to happen with the fogs that causes a short in the circuit with the original fogmod, your car will not start. This can cause a panic until you realize the fuse is blown. (the add-a-circuit portion can be added to the original method to fix this, in case you were wondering)
2. Cost of the Fog relay if you happen to break the prong while bending it
3. Damage caused to the fuse panel by forcing an extra wire in the slot.

Cons:
1. Costs more than the original. (approx 8-11 dollars for the Add-a-Circuit, 2-4 dollars for the quick disconnects, etc)
2. There is more work. More crimping of terminals, plus filing down the quick disconnects to fit the original relay plugs.

==========================================================

Parts Needed:
1 Mini Add-A-Circuit (Found at Pepboys, Autozone or partsexpress.com)

3 x Male quick disconnects

4 x Female shielded quick disconnects

2-3 feet of 16 GA. Wire

1 x 7.5a mini fuses:

Tools Needed:

ratchet with 10mm fitting, wire strippers, crimping tool, fuze puller or tweezers

-------------------------------------------------------

Step 1: On the passenger side, pull up on the door plastic runner along the door sill. It is attached by clips and should pop right up with ease.

Remove the kick panel cover to expose the fuse box. This is attached by metal clips, and requires a little more force.

Step 2: Remove these two bolts (Size 10 Metric). One is on top one is on the bottom.

Step 3: Lift up on the fuse panel and pull it open to see the Fog Relay.

Step 4: Make three 4-6" wires with a Male quick disconnect on one end and one Female quick disconnect on the other, and one 12-16" wire with one female quick disonnect on one end only. (You will need to file down the male end of the wire so that it is the same size as the corresponding prong on the Fog Relay)

Step 5: Crimp the Mini Add-a-Circuit to the end of the long wire. (In this picture I already added the 2 7.5AMP fuses to the mini add a circuit, but you can do it later on in the instructions).

Step 6: Plug the wires onto the Fog Relay and slide the Fog Relay back into the area behind the fuse panel, then plug three male ends into the corresponding slots of the fuse panel (the three plugs shown are the only ones used, the fourth is empty). You may have to file down the male terminals here if they don't fit. When done you should want to wrap the terminals here with electrical tape.

Step 7: Pull the last/bottom 7.5AMP fuse from the middle column (this is your ignition fuse) and replace it with your mini Add-a-Circuit (don't forget to add 2 x 7.5amp fuses to the mini add a circuit, otherwise your car won't start).

Step 8: Turn the key to the "On" position and enjoy your fogs. Make sure the Highbeams aren't on. (my emblem is missing because i'm currently black pearling it.)

Step 9: Put your car back together.

ALL INFORMATION POSTED HERE IS FOR EDUCATION ONLY. I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHOEVER MAY BURN DOWN THEIR CAR/HOUSE OR CAUSE IT TO NO LONGER WORK IN ANY OTHER WAY WHILE ATTEMPTING THIS MOD. I AM NOT LIABLE FOR ANY PERSONAL INJURIES THAT MAY OCCUR WHILE DOING THIS MOD ;)

WARNING: Do NOT combine this mod with the highbeam mod. (The one where you take apart your steering column and ground 1 of the wires so that you can run the headlights/fogs/highbeams all at the same time. IT MIGHT FRY YOUR FUSE BOX.

Do you guys in the USA have DRLs (daytime running lights)?

You mention not having your high beams on. This would be a great mod to in lieu of the DRLs which is the high beams on low voltage.

How would that work?

Yes we have DRL's most of us just unplug the plug from the DRL box... Your high beams still work tho....

I'm not sure I understand your question... or statement fully.

Well, nyczzzjohn says not to have your high beams on, but your high beams are on - at low voltage - when your DRLs are on.

So to effectively make the fogs DRLs you do this mod, unplug the DRLs from the DRL box, and you're good to go? Your high beams are not otherwise affected?

I think the main reason he said that is because if your highbeams are on, your fogs are not on...meaning you cant check to see if what you just did is working properly because your fogs wont be turned on...

there is another tutorial that allows you to still have the fogs on with the high beams...I think its another Sophie tut

^^ correct, normally when you turn on your full highbeams, the fogs will shut off. But there is mod to keep your full highbeams on along with your HIDs and fogs (The one where you take apart your steering column and ground 1 of the wires).

The fogs were never meant to be on at the same time as your full power highbeams, and if you have all three running, it will overload the relay and fuse box and this is what happened to tigger: http://my.is/forums/f90/fog-mod-gone-fried-313533/

DRL and the fog mod will work fine. I haven't tried it with the full power DRL mod though.

i just did this mod yesterday and make sure you use the shielded quick disconnects (I used shielded female connectors. I know you noted it but the picture you posted is of an unshielded one).

Also, the add a mini circuit I bought came with extra fuses so you shouldn't need to buy any. just use the stock one and the extra one that comes with the kit.
