the dealer charges $50 for the oil change
i'm wondering if they're using synthetic or just a regular oil

You'd have to ask the dealer.

I pay $29 for a change with Castrol Synthetic blend.

I am doing it myself.

cost me 24 bucks for mobil 1 synthetic + Lexus V8 Filter that fits perfectly on the IS for 4.99 :)

total under 30 bucks for a lil grease work.

used to pay, but I'm doing it myself now, its way too easy not to, and saves some serious $ over thelife of the car.

Is it easy for you to fit your arm to get to the oil filter ?

It took me a helluv a time to get in there.

BAH having thick arms sucks :p

unless you request synthetic, you're almost certainly getting whatever standard oil they use. All my services have been complimentary up until my next one (30k). I'll probably do the major interval services at the dealer 30/60/90k because I get a free loaner for the day. The other services are basically oil change/air filter change/tire rotation and I don't see any point in going to the dealer for that work. I just took my wife's accord to the mobil station 2 blocks away and got an oil change for $20 total. I use mobil 1 on my car and i asked how much it would be and they told me it would be $15 + $6 or $7/qt so I'm looking at about $50-$55 for that.

I'd change it on my own if I had my own house, but living in an aparment with a parking garage is a little more difficult to work on my own car.

What's the best way to get the filter out, once it's removed from the block? I'm still having trouble with that.

On a manual...its easy...right out the top.

I have automatic and it's getting caught between the dipstick and the ECU box. There's a hose right there that it catches on.

No, not literally. :lol: It's just a pain to take the bottom cover loose. Maybe I'm just lazy.

after how long do you need to change oil if you use the synthetic one?
i know that the regular oil needs to be changed every 3000 miles

$30 at Wal Mart Supercenters. Full Mobil One Synthetic. Not a bad price....I get to stay clean and pull trailer park chicks while they work on my car 8) .

Unscrew the tranny fluid dipstick. Movin the dipstick out of the way will produce more clearance.
