I made a long freeway trip from Ventura to San Diego last week. When I unloaded the trunk I found that the bags that had been sitting just right of center and more forward were very, very warm to the touch where they had been in contact with the trunk floor. The "hot spot" seems to be inboard and forward of where the muffler is located. The heat was enough that I might be concerned about carrying certain items (sensitive electronics, food stuffs, etc) in that spot. Is this normal? The car has a completely stock exhaust system on it.

The heat is normal and I've got a stock exhaust as well. I've got a small 250 watt amp for my subs seated right above the area where the muffler is, hidden underneath the trunk cover and mat. I've kept it there for almost a year and had no problems with overheating. I wouldn't worry too much about anything sitting above the mat except for food that may melt.
