I decided to tried to make my own custom arm rest. The result was all
right. The biggest problem is the sewing process using fake leather/vinyl
that I use for the armrest. Plus my sewing skill is very limited. Actually
I had my mom help me, but the sewing job done was not very good. If I had
the armrest done by a professional furniture/upholstery shop. I think the
vinyl will fit much better. Since I was too cheap to do that. The result
was only all right. Anyway here how it was done.

1. Went to a custom foam shop, and order a custom cut foam. I like a big
armrest. So I order a medium hard (different grade of foam can be order,
from supersoft to superhard) foam with dimension 5x8x13 inches. Cost
$10.00 Cdn$

2. Went to Frabic store and got some vinyl/fake leather and zipper Cost
$15.00 Cdn
(You can take the foam to professional hpholstery shop, they quote me $35 to
get the foam cover with Vinyl (fake leather material) If you want to use
geniure leather, it will cost you another $30+ dollars pending on the
leather you select, I guess the key is match it with the exact same leather.
I decided to go with the cheap route. Just sew the black vinyl that I got
from Frabicland. Doing that myself very tough job.

3. Got a super thin wood board for the base of the armrest $8

4. Hinges from Home depot: $8 for 2 (you need to select the right one to
make this work)

Total cost for the armrest was around $50 Canadian.

From the picture, you can tell the sewing was not done very well. Especaily
at the base and the back of the armrest, where the zipper lies. I should
have use a smaller zipper, it will mostly look better and easier to sew it
together. But I am leavign the way it is for now. May be take it to a
upholstery shop later. Need to get better/match material to the color of
the seat.

Since the hinges was attach to the ash tray, no damage was ever done to the
car. I pop the ashtray out of the car, drill two hole on the ashtray cover
and attach the hinges to the ash tray. The bolt actual goes inside the
ashtray for good perfect fit. I attach the hinges to the super thin board.
Then I glue the board to the foam. Then Cover the foam with my Vinyl
covering.

The armrest work excellent, is make to fit me perfectly. But it kind of
look out of place. I think I make it too big. In the picture it kind of
look ugly too, because the vinyl cover does not match very well. That big
zipper was a mistake. Anyway, I am going to redone the cover with proper
matching hpholstery.

The design is good, however, I can't get over the BIG color difference compared to the rest of the interior.

If you can get that vinyl color-matched perfectly, then that would be perfect.

I think I would have left everything stock.

looks good except for the color.
Teg did an armrest that uses the part for the rear seat/truck pass though, you might want to check that out and compare or get ideas from it.

You can do what you want.. that is fine. But im telling you that if you put that armrest on a golf cart it would still look like cheap crap.

Just my $4.20

I was about to talk crap about your little armrest there, but then I saw what is300soon posted: 2 spent qual time with mom...
You just had to bring in the mom, didn't you?
He's right, maybe it's not the greatest, but having your moms help is cool, who cares what others say.

Daddy rich- ROFL.

tchan- Atleast your trying something. If you match the color to be closer and cut some of the height, I think it just may work.

Nice ingenuity skills.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I am working on a new one with correct upolsetery to completely match the car. Also may be make the armrest a little smaller.

is300soon, Thanks for you comment about spending quality time with my Mom. We all should spend a little more time with our parents.

I promise V2.0 will be a major improvement.
