It's going really really slow.

e.g. 1.5 gigs is gonna take well over 45 min.

Can anyone offer an explanation or a solution to this?

Are they are on the same channel? What PIO/DMA mode are the drives in?

Yeah, they're on the same primary IDE cable.

and what is PIO/DMA

are those jumper settings?
If so, primary master, and slave settings. No cable select.

No, they're not jumper settings. Go to Device Manager and check your IDE ATA/ATAPI controller settings. Set them to DMA if available.

if there on the same cable its transferring at the speed of the slower drive whatever that might be. but 45 minutes is ridiculous.

Yeah, but they're both 7200 RPM drives...

Any other ideas?

How fragmented are the files being moved and the how full and fragmented is the drive you're transferring the files to? I know that when I decompress multi part archives or do CRC checks the speeds are significantly faster if the files aren't fragged to hell, moving isn't that noticable though, so that's probably not it.

You could try putting them on different IDE chains for the time being.

The 2nd drive is relatively full, which is why i'm moving them to the first drive.

1st drive has 50 gigs of free space.
2nd drive has 2 gigs.

start with the basics

are you sure the cables are properly seated?

are either of the drives damaged?

Put the drives on separate IDE controllers it will speed up the process allowing simultaneous read and writes. As they are on the same controller now it must read then write taking turns using the resources.

Yeah, I've reseated both. They seemed to be plugged in fine and one drive is brand new, the other drive I've been using in another system and is fine.

I think i'll try putting them on diff IDE's then.
