The traction control is always on but can be disabled when pressing the "TRAC OFF" button. The traction control system is not as advanced as the VSC found in more expensive models and DSC found in the entire BMW range, however I'm sure it serves its purpose. From what I've heard you should disable the traction control when you're in deep snow. One time back in 1994 when I had my Lexus GS300 (equipped with TRAC) I was driving it in deep snow and got stuck. With the TRAC on, I was getting into more trouble as I was less in control.
