Well, Just like most of the people on this feed, I am having the same problem w my '02 is300. The difference is that my left side works just fine, although my right side doesn't. The lights that are on my car are LEDs that were on the car when I bought it. Had a couple people check it out seeming to believe it might be the ballast and they are telling me to just get a brand new set of tail lights... There has to be another solution here! Can it really be a fuse or not really seeing as my left one is working?
All your parking lights are on one fuse, the 10A Tail, so it's probably not a fuse if half the lights work. LED lighting does not use ballasts, it is simply a light emitting diode. If it's wired in the wrong direction they won't work, but if they worked before then that's not it. The car is split into different circuits and it sounds like you have an open on your one side. I would suggest following the link I have above because it shows you how to narrow the Tail circuit down. Other than that, I would access a DVOM(meter or test light) and see where you have +12v.

This is an electrical problem, you don't need to replace your expensive taillight housings. You are getting some bad advice. wouldn't hurt to check the wiring behind it though.

After all this time and still no answer. I did something stupid and busted my right rear tail light housing. Now both the tail lights on the right do not work. Brakes do work. Blinker works. I noticed a n odd connector on the backside of the tail light thats screwed in place. Is that some kind of intertial disconnect?

Edit: I Took it all apart last night and the connector must just be the trunk lid brake light wire connector. I will start with new bulbs and see where that leads.

Reviving this thread..

I just noticed this problem on my 2001 IS300.

Here's the problem, when i start the car and turn on the lights my headlights work, but no lights in the rear. Pressing down the brakes turns on the brake light but during normal driving my rear is completely unlit, taillights and license plate light.

I've noticed my license plate going out, can replacing these fix my problem?

Also, i removed my fog lights and zip tied the sockets to something that will prevent them from hanging. After noticing my taillight/license plate light not working and reading some threads here on MY.IS, i went back and taped all the sockets up so nothing is exposed.

Ive also replaced the 10Amp fuse in the driver side kick panel in the front seat. DIdnt help.

Thanks fellow isers.
Sounds like you might have an open circuit to the rear bulbs, but there are seperate circuits based off three connectors in the kick panel. The rear is on it's own circuit, mainly the 2 taillights and 2 inner trunk tails. There's a white/ black wire and green/white wire that are taped to the bumper and swing from the driver side to the passenger taillight. Make sure those two wires are in good condition because I found this is common problem and it was hanging down one day.
This thread should help and also shot you a PM.

This guy saved my week long search for this damn short to ground.. Right on top of the exhaust tip were those wires in the bumper you were talking about. Seen two other non factory fixes with electrical tape in the same area.. I need to find the best way to relocate the wiring. I just have it zip tied away from the exhaust for now and it's working. But now, I randomly have a trunk lid light not on when running lights are on but comes on when braking. What's that about?!??

Same thing happened to me bout a month ago. Checked my fuses and realized the taillight fuse was blown. Replaced it and blew it again once I tried to turn on the lights. Turns out my fog light wires were stripped and were grounding out my taillights. They must run on the same circuit... So start with ur fuses
I'm having the same problem but I know don't know a whole about electrical. But exactly where where the fog lights stripped from ?

I had the same issues but! I figured it out, idk if this'll work for everyone but, it did for me. I changed my fuses, checked out the relay for the break peddle, tore open my trunk and checked that little failed box and all those were fine sooooo I had the idea to take out the break bulbs and test them on a battery and, come to find out, one of the bulbs wasn't showing blown but, infact was after seeing it didn't light up when hooked up to a battery.
