this isn't an every time sorta thing, but sometimes when i have the clutch pedal down and shift into first, it will sorta grind, it won't make the noise but it will shake the shifter somewhat violently - if it lasted any longer i could imagine it hurting my wrist and arm

is this something i'm doing or not doing?

It could your coordination with the clutch pedal release, steping on the gas pedal and puting it in gear is either too early or off.

it will do it when i'm sitting at idle at a light, i can't shift into first at all when the car is moving even 2 mph

learn how to double clutch back to first, no problem here at all.

u can do it 10~15mph even back to first by double clutching, absolutly no grinding, no hard ass effort into gears.
