What does "IS" stand for, if anything?

I've heard that IS stands for 'Individual Sedan.'

ANybody know what all the other Lexus cars stand for?

heres my take:

ES - economical sedan
GS - grand sedan
LS - luxury sedan
SC - sport coupe
RX/LX - ?

My sales guy told me it stands for International Sedan since it's available in Europe as IS 200 and in Japan as Altezza.

I think it's arbitrary...except maybe the "original" models: ES, SC, LS (and GS?).

I wouldn't think too hard about this one. Yeah - a dealer told us that IS stands for "Invididual Sedan", but what difference does it make?

I like to think of IS300 being
"Inline Six, 3.00 liters displacement".

The RX/LX probably have the "X" from "4X4" (offroad)

I am sure some marketing people ponder these things over and over and probably pick letters based on how they look in print and what psycology studies say about peoples' impressions of certain letters.

Well, Bernie Kitts from Lexus of Rockville told me it meant "Individual Sedan"... So who is right? Who cares? That is why I said not to think too hard. I think people assign words to the "IS" arbitrarily to suit their fancy.
