I've noticed that if I am driving... and push the shifter into neutral from D... the car doesn't necessarily go into neutral right away. There's a short pause and the car keeps driving like normal and THEN you'll hear the engine free up when the transmission finally engages neutral.

I know if you happen to be moving and are in neutral... and then shift into Drive... it will not necessarily engage the drive gears right away in order to smooth things out.

Is the delay shifting into neutral the same thing? I wouldn't think engaging neutral would cause any problems if it happened right away.
