I know that some cars come with black boxes in them which tells thing like how fast your car was going and records other info. So if you happened to crash your car, the cops or insurance company could be able to tell how fast you were going. This could be bad if you crashed your car when your speeding, because your insurance company wouldnt have to fix it. If there is one i want to take it out! (if possible)

Does anyone have any info on this.

yeah, the new corvettes have em, i dunno about the IS but there is a suspicious looking black box in my trunk, next to the dead body i keep for weight distribution. i'll post a pic in like 5 minutes, i have to clean up the blood and stuff.

I don't know where you get your information, but you should really research before you spout off incorrect info. Your insurance company can not deny a claim because you were speeding.

I would love for you to post your source as to where you obtained that information. I work for the largest insurance company in the world and I can tell you there is nothing in the policy that supports your comment.

That box is the first aid kit. But I guess its too late for that in your case.

Well, the OBD-II computer does track alot of info about how the car runs. There are lots of other ECUs, some of which _might_ log info. Who knows. I doubt anyone other than the manufacturer, or emissions testers are tapping into those things right now.

Buy a GM, and get onstar so they can follow you around town by satellite. I wonder if the police can tap into onstar ("in an emergency") to keep track of a car (via GPS and cellphone technology) being pursued?

Here's something scarey. Awhile ago i read in a B2B auto industry publication that OBD III will have all the features as in OBD II. Except even more so...when your check engine light goes off, OBD III will signal via transponder (to DMV?) the codes that your car is throwing. So that "testpipe" you put in will immediately be noticed. Even more scarey than that is that OBD III might possibly allow "your local authorities" to disable your car with police-only type device that tells the car to shut down. I think the reasoning behind that was to decrease the amount and danger of high-speed chases. Dang! No more World's Scariest Police Chases.

I guess I was being a little of base there, but I guess I get tired of people making comments about insurance companies that are off base. I see it a lot in the threads in this forum and it is comments like those that make it difficult for the claims department to do their job.

People already think enough that insurance companies are out to rip you off. The bottom line is you purchase insurance as a contract and your contract is the policy. If every policy holder would take the time to actually read their policy then they would know what they are buying and there would be no question as what will be paid and not.

I just get sensative when comments like what you stated are made with no facts to back them up.

Bottom line is if you are speeding, do something stupid like run a red light, your policy will cover you if you purchased the right coverage. The fact you are speeding does not exclude your coverage.

DonCorleone: That's the EVAP (Evaporative Emission) control system. Most of that space is occupied by a large charcoal canister. It's part of what's responsible for bestowing the car its LEV status.

Seriously, that's the almighty ECM (Engine Control Module). That's also where your rolling code is kept, and what Lexus has to replace should you lose all of your master keys.

2> They couldn't find the part # in their system so they couldn't order me any yet (but they said if I waited another couple of months they should be able to get some).

if memory serves me, i recall reading the part numbers for the service manuals or something like that in the manual, its somewhere towards the back i think, or was it the front? hmm... i also remember posting some part numbers for some type of documentation on the IS awhile back.
