Japan's Sumitomo Electric has developed a lightweight, porous Aluminum-Celmet meshlike metal compound that holds great promise as an alternative to current nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. In essence, “Celmet is a porous metal made from nickel or nickel chrome alloy. The porous metal manufacturing process comprises electro conductive coating to plastic foam, followed by nickel plating and plastic foam removal by heat treatment.”

The kicker in all this is the promise of tripling the capacity/range of lithium-ion batteries or, conversely, maintaining current capacity/range with a battery that is one-third to two-thirds the size if battery size is a problem.

Very interesting. We all knew that battery technology was due for some serious advancement but this isn't really what I expected. I'm excited to see where this goes.
