Lately the forum has had a bunch of off topic posts, which seem to have some people in a fit. I feel that it is no big deal and I think that it is easier to have one forum instead of many. That way I don't have to remember which post is in what forum.

One of the suggestions made was an IS300 Owners (only) Forum, but a way to verify the ownership needs to be found, and I also think that this would exclude members that actually have something constructive to say about the IS300 because they don't have one. Instead of making an IS300 Owners Forum why not just make a General (Non IS300 Related) Forum. Change the name of the current General Discussion forum to the IS300 Forum and make the General Discussion forum open to any topics.

I think people are posting off topic discussions because there is only so much you can talk about regarding *only* the IS300. I also think that people talk about off topic things because there is a sense of familiarity within the forums.

Also, it seems like the other forums on the IS300 move much slower than the General forum. Do they really need to be seperated into 3 different forums? Maybe one called IS300 Tech could be made which would include all three modification forums.

And a suggestion related to the website in general, not the forums...why not make a tech articles section? TEG has recently done his armrest/subwoofer modification which many members seem to be interested in. Instead of everyone asking TEG repeatedly to post pics and questions on how he did it they could just go to the tech articles and see. This would also prevent new members from asking questions like: the front armrest is too small what can I do? Hopefully they will look at the tech article section first and then if they still have questions then they could post a message. There have been several members of the site that have done suspension mods and I think pics of their cars before and after and *hopefully* installation pics/instructions could be included. Same for the clear bra (3M film thing), tinting, etc., although installation pics would of course probably be non existent.

I also know that Webmaster (also the other moderators, especially TEG) are putting a lot of time into this site for free, so please don't anyone take this as a "this site sucks" type of post.

Concerning the tech articles, although my webpage building skills are not super good, I would be willing to build the tech section up if you want some help.

like others have said a chat room would eliminate at least half the useless falmebait crap posted here, but is that worth the extra time and bandwith? its mostly newbies who waste space, posting questions that have been posted so many times its not funny, not considerate enough to use search or read back and skim some topics, hit the faq- to see if they cant get what they need, then they become bitter when forum members bash them for being an idiot (gee, wouldnt you be mad if you had to answer the same damn question every frikkin next post?) then we have pplm playing bouncer trying to kick anyone they please off the board, just because- hell, if you could do that so could i, get the hell of and stop b1tching...maybe newbies should get a screen asking if they have checked the archives and faq and are ready to be flamed if they are idiots. i kno it seems im bashing newbies but im not, just most of them are proned to repeatedly annoy and aggravate. ive met a few newbies who actually read the faq, searched the topics, went back and read a few, if only everyone else was so considerate and respectful.

I, for one, am not for a chat room because I think that a lot of info would be missed by people...the board lets the info stay and everyone can be on at different times. A chat is only good when there are people on at the same time. Also, web based chat rooms are chaotic and everyone is talking about different things to different people. I find that AIM works much better for chat than a webpage based board.

Scott, That was precisely the suggestion I made in another thread. I am a Moderator on an Explorer board very similar to this one, and they have a forum like that. Its VERY large and its one of everybody's favorites. If you'd like to check it out go to www.explorerforum.com. They used to have the same software you all have, but Rick the Admin upgraded to some new stuff that I like a lot better than the UBB, give it a look.

Don, Only problem with a chatroom is it doesnt have the searchability that a forum has. One of the beauties of this setup is you can look back and see what other info is availiable. With a chatroom, the info is lost.

like i said, i agree, but its not like the majority of the newbies take the time to look back and do a search anyways. guess some ppl are just too inconsiderate, disrespectful and lazy to do a search before posting questions that have been posted so many times a search would probably bring up a page with the same heading.

More people do a search than you'd think. One way to make them is to have the Moderators poactively tell people who ask redundant questions to run a search first.

Another thing I think you guys are missing is a feedback forum, just for suggestions etc. That would take one aspect of off topic posting out of here.

_This_ IS the IS300 General forum. I think it would be alot easier to start new sections and migrate people with special interests (like owners) there rather that trying to create a new "general" forum and get _everyone_ to go over there.

Tony said that he would make an IS300 Owners forum once he works out some sort of "proof of ownership" scheme.

====================================

I would like to spend more time working on the FAQ (make a replacement tire FAQ, etc). And less time closing topics and deleting posts in the general forum...

This forum is already like a "General Discussion" not "General IS300 Discussion" board, which is what it is supposed to be. If only IS300 owners are allowed to post in the Owners Forum I think that it will detract from the forum because not only those who own one have something to say/ask about the car. You wouldn't have to get everyone to migrate to another board really, just make an IS300 General Board and leave this one as is.

Some thoughs from someone who doesn't own the IS300, but expecting to buy the mtx IS:

I've learned all I need to know about the IS300 from reading the FAQ and also getting feedback from owners. By my rough estimates this forum is 30/70 signal to noise ratio, which is good for a "general" discussion group. I can see how owners would not welcome information on competing products since they already did their homework and have decided on the IS.

The posts I enjoy are talking about other cars and how they compare to the IS. I don't like posts that are immature pissing matches between overzealous owners. These arguments lack any value and are waste of time.

Quality of posts are slowly declining. It's probably inevitable since we have pretty much exhausted the topics covering the IS.

I don't think IS300.net needs a "general anything" forum. If people want to talk stock market, career advice, etc. they should go to another site.

This IS300 "General" forum is a great place for prospective buyers to talk about different alternatives, and for people to come and debate the merits of their cars with IS300 owners. I don't think the IS300 general forum should ever be restricted to owners only.

The IS300 "Owners" forum that I want Tony to create would be so that people who already have the car could "talk shop" with other owners and not have to wade through all the "comparison shopping" and "my XYZ is better than your IS300" postings.

As far as I am concerned, Tony could just create the forum, and moderators could delete the off-topic postings.
Tony wants to do it right and find a way to keep non owners OUT. (Perhaps by asking for a valid IS300 VIN to get in, or by needing to type a key word from the owners manual or something like that). Hopefully he will decide soon how to control it.

Okay, so if the owners forum gets going then is this "General Discussion" section going to be unmoderated in the sense of topics? Then all the posts in the owners forum will be (hopefully) only about the IS300 while posts on the General will go on like they do now. TEG, in a sense I'm suggesting the same thing as you except I don't think the new forum should be open to owners only. That is only my opinion and Webmaster can, of course, do whatever he sees fit.

I would hope that any "IS300 owners" forum is open for anyone to READ (as in read-only), but designed only for real owners to post.

It could work if anyone can come in but the forum policy says "any non owner question/comments will be deleted by the moderator" would work almost as well as trying to screen ahead of time.

This "IS300 general" forum would probably continue with some minimal moderation, but hopefully some new people (other than me) can handle that once we get the owners forum going.

Ok, I've been letting TEG take the heat for this thread so let me clarify a few things...

1) I will not add "chat" to the website at this time. I won't say never, but not now. Chat is not a replacement for a forum, because it remains undocumented and unsearchable. However, it can be a welcome augmentation. I will do scheduled chats however, for guest speakers, fix-it sessions or some other reason. More on this later.

2) I will make an IS300 Owner's Forum. It will be readable by everyone (even non-registered users), just like the rest of the forums, but will be postable only by verified* Owners and.

*Method of Verification TBA

3) I will NOT make an Off-Topic Forum. This is an On-Topic website.
This does not mean that Off-Topic (Non IS300) posts are not welcome to the General Discussion forum. It is a general discussion of things related to the IS300, Lexus, driving and cars we like or would like to have.

Also, TEG has made a FAQ and other information that has not been "promoted" properly on the site. In addition, I have an upgraded comparison table and other stuff to add.
