Well here it is, the new 2002 Jaguar X-Type. It will be AWD and come with the choice of a 2.5 liter or 3.0 liter engine. I think that it looks pretty nice actually. The interior is better than the S-Type also. It will be priced from $30k-$40k. What do you guys/gals think?

Hey thanks for the post! That looks nice.
A definate IS300 competitor.

That is almost certainly that car that has been codenamed "X400" for a while, and YES it is based on the European Mondeo platform.

The Ford Contour is no more, and there are no plans to bring the _new_ Mondeo platform to the USA in any car other than the new "baby" Jaguar.

I like Jags, but they're not as good as Benzes or Bimmers, or even Lexuses. I test drove the S-Type (both the V-6 and V-8), and although it seems like a nice car, it caters to a different league. Jags are archaic...they don't even offer Xenon lights, not to mention some of the other goodies available these days. The V-6 S-Type priced out at around $50K and the V-8 leans toward $60K. And although you do get some nice options like voice activated phone dialing, and Nav, and radio controls, there's plenty others missing. To make things worse, it's quite disturbing to know that the S-Type is built on the Lincoln LS's platform.
The X-400 will be based on the European Ford Mondeo platform. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that...after all, the ES300 is really a better version of the Camry.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the XJR/XKR are mighty powerful cars, but handle terribly - they're extremely tail happy. So I don't have high expectations from the X-400, even though it looks nice.
The salesman at Jaguar first told me that the S-Type's doing great...they can't get enough cars to meet demand. But towards the end of my visit, he seemed to be willing to let me sleep with his wife to get me to buy the car. He took $4000 off a brand new car...that got me thinkin'.
How drastic the X-400's entry is to the compact sport sedan market remains to be seen.
Competition's great!!

What really disturbs me is that they are refitting a plant that used to build Escorts to make the X-Type. Can you imagine the LS430 being built on an refitted Echo plant?

Or could you imagine the Lexus IS300 being made at a plant that makes Toyota Corolla's???

(It is by the way)

============================================

Looking at more of those pictures, I see some resemblence between the X-type and the Lincoln LS. Ford will probably be stealing LS sales for some of the X-type customers...

The 2002 Jaguar X-Type is the cover story for the November 13, 2000 issue of AutoWeek (page 16). The article states that "the 3.0-liter is rated at 230 horsepower and 217 lb-ft of torque; Jag estimates 0-to-60 times for the automatic at 7.2 seconds." The Jag is also noted in the December 2000 issue of Road & Track (page 61).

There was an article in the Toronto Star a couple weeks ago.

  • Based on the next gen Mondeo.
  • Full time AWD. Nominal rear bias of 70%. MacPherson struts up front and full-independent rear unique to X-type. The reason for the AWD is because Mondeo is a FWD and no Jag is going to be front drive for now. So the comprimise with AWD.
  • 2 V6 engine choices: a 3.0 L with 230 hp and 217 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 in 6.8 seconds with a 5 speed manual or 7.2 second with an 5-speed automatic.
    A 2.5 L with 197 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 in 7.0 and 8.5 seconds respectively.
  • It will have the latest in fibre-optics, telematics, satelite navigation and voice activated HVAC, telephone and audio system!
