Lexus GS Gets a New Engine and a New Name

Torrance, CA, Aug. 14 — Lexus has introduced its 2001 model year GS 430 featuring a 300-horsepower 4.3-liter V8. The sedan's exterior has been revised and standard side curtain airbag supplemental restraint systems for the driver and front passenger have been added.

The new high-performance V8 engine in the GS 430 meets the federal Ultra Low Emissions
Vehicle (ULEV) certification and uses no more fuel than the smaller-displacement engine it
replaces. With the boost in torque, the GS 430 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds, (compared to 6.0 seconds for the 2000 GS 400) and can cover the quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds. The engine performs as if it had another half-liter of displacement, due in large part to Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). This system optimizes valve overlap throughout the engine's speed range (not just at one or two set speeds) and in all operating conditions, eliminating the
traditional compromise between low-end torque and high-rpm horsepower.

For 2001, Lexus freshened its distinct appearance with revised front and rear
styling details. High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, which enhance visibility for night driving, are newly standard on the GS 430. New six-spoke alloy wheels give the car a more rakish profile, and the taillights feature a simplified design. New luxury details for the 2001 model include a standard leather wrapped steering wheel with controls for the audio system, an electronic compass, water-repellent front door glass, and additional interior wood trim. A new available touch-screen navigation system employs DVD-based map data, replacing a system that stored map data on a computer hard drive. The system's LCD display also provides control functions for the audio and automatic climate control systems and the trip computer.

Pricing for the GS 430 has been set at $47,355, an increase of $1,050 over
the 2000 GS 400. On a comparably equipped basis, the increase is 0.3 percent over the previous generation GS.

I loved the GS400, and I'm sure the 430's even better. Anyone have any pics of the new model yet?
Also, I know the engine is capable of more power...why don't they raise it to 340 or more to compete with all the upcoming flagships??

If by flagship you mean Jag XJR, E55 AMG, or BMW M5 then no it doesn't compare... but if you mean BMW 540i, E430 sport, A6 4.2 quattro sport, Jag S-type... then yes it compares nicely...

Thanks for the link to those official photos. The exterior changes on the GS430 can best be described as subtle and typical minor Lexus changes. Like different tail light lenses and such. Probably only the most discriminating auto enthusiasts would be able to tell the difference between the GS400 and the GS430 visually (according to those photos).

Hi Lexus lovers!!! My local dealer in NJ just gave me the "hot
off the
press" brochure for the 2001 GS. Here are the changes......The 4.3
liter
engine still has 300 HP but comes in at a lower 5600 RPM vs. 6000 for
the
current 4.0 liter engine. The torque goes from 310 at 4000 RPM to 325
at a
very low 3400 RPM. Gearing is the same. This should translate to
better off
the line performance, ( like it really needs it!!!).

The new colors are black cherry, which is a verrrrry dark red,
midnight
pine, which is a very dark green, blue onyz which is a very dark blue
and
mystic sea, which is a silvery green moss color. The interior colors
remain
as before.

The console has more wood on it and the steering wheel now has wood
on
part of the wheel.

There is a killer Mark Levinson Audio system package with 10
speakers and
240 watts of undistorted power.

There are HID lights standard on the GS430 and a compass on the
rear view
mirror.

The grill has fewer vertical bars and they are silver now as
compared to
black on the previous GS. The GS 16" wheel now has 6 spokes instead
of 5 ,
but the 17" wheels remain, which is fine by me.

Lastly, the rear tailights have a slighly different configuration,
but
look basically the same to me.

According to the brochure, which by the way has some beautiful
pictures
in it, leads us to believe that the suspensions are all the same on all
models, with the wheels being the only option you can get. I guess the
"L"
series coming out later will have trick suspensions and better gearing
to
compete against the BMW "M" series.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the 4.3 engine qualifies for ultra low
emissions and therefore you do not get the steering wheel mounted shift
buttons, but now you can get them on the GS300. Go figure.

Cars will be available in about 3-4 weeks, and prices seem about
the
same, but of course, the option packages will drive them up.

Lastly, there are some verrrry attractive female models used in
some of
the pictures, so we can guess that Lexus is targeting this car mostly
to
guys. To the ladies in our group, I hope you do not find this sexist.

My dealer is already pushing me to lease a new GS430 when my
current
GS400 lease comes due in 2 months. Allocations are tight you
know....(salesman speak)

So ladies and gentlemen, hop on down to your friendly dealer and
get the
brochure, and build your dream cars.

By the way, for the first time I really examined a black on black
IS 300
and it is stunning in this color. I especially like the dash and
console
treatment. Very avant garde and ahead of its time. The Audi TT also
has a
killer interior if you like that kind of look.

Can't wait to drive the new 430 and compare to the "old" GS400.

Why is this so? Acura TL3.2 has ULEV engine and still has Sport Shift. This is sad. GS400 (430 now) definitely was on the list for my next car shopping, but I'm not sure now. No manual and no Sport shift ... May be this L series will has it ?????

Perhaps the extra 40 ponies and v8 kick out a little too much to stay ULEV. Who knows?
