So since it's so dead in here i might as well put up this project that my friend James and i embarked on back in february of 09'. We started out by finding a clean roller that was pre-75, since in nazi-fornia anything 76' and after requires smog. What we ended up was this 75' sans motor and tranny for $300 out in Lake Elsinore:

I made sure to check the main areas known for rust and was happy with what we had purchased. Here's a few pics of towing to a flat are for the flatbed to load the 914. That's me in the green.

Now that it was back at my friend's place we addressed the rust and repaired all of it:
This picture is of the battery tray "hell hole", the original design was flawed b/c rain water would drip onto the battery through a small mesh vent placed directly about the battery. In turn the battery acid would then corrode and rust away the tray and eventually the entire rear suspension console. Normally this determines if a 914 is worth repairing or parted out.



Repaired the area, the welds were done with a stick welder :( :

This is just the right rear tail light area that contained some rust:

Removed the sound deadening from the floor pans:

Stripped the cabin of paint with aircraft paint remover:



Repaired a few minor areas with rust:

Circled areas had rust and then prepped the bare metal with rustoleum primer and finished it with Por15 anti-rust inhibitor and paint:

Within that same time frame we found our powerplant in the form of an early 90's jdm subaru legacy ej22.

Got a pretty deal on the motor, considering the place we got it from was going out of business. In this transaction we picked up a total of 3 motors including our ej22, the other two were a 4AGZE and 3SGTE+GT4 Trans all for $700. We managed to sell the two other motors and in turn it cost us nothing for the ej22. :)

Eventually i tackled the rusted right rear tail light area:

You can see the replacement piece in red and we mocked it up before welding it in place:

James later found time to clean up the rear trunk and engine bay and painted it black w/ some high temp bbq paint:

Another thing we decided to change on the 914 was to backdate the bumpers. The 75 & 76 bumpers looks like this:

The 70-74' bumpers look like this:

Here's what we did to backdate the bumpers:
Made a template off our parts car:

Drilled the holes:

Mounted, tada:


Now for the front bumper. Similar procedure, but here's what we ended up with:


Oh and we got bored and mocked up a stock IS300 wheel to see how it'd look:

Now as for the transmission, we're going to run the original 914 transmission adapted onto the EJ22 motor. To make this possible we had to purchase an adapter plate+flywheel from Kennedy Adapters. Here's a picture of the flywheel:

After figuring out how to attach the two we did the necessary maintenance items on the EJ22, which included a new timing belt, water pump, timing belt tensioner, seals, and some bearings.

We then mocked up the engine+tranny to see how far forward or back the engine would be placed:



From the pictures you can tell the throttle body is just a mere inch away from the rear trunk. We debated on reversing the intake manifold and such, but decided to just cut out a section and then box it back up to create some space for the intake tube to run.

With the engine and tranny mocked up, we purchased some motor cradle mounts made for a VW Vanagon Suby transplant:

We attached the two arms with a decent sized L shaped angle iron. I had the pieces tacked together and then had a muffler shop do the finishing welds.

Over the next year progress slowed down, but things were being done. James sanded the entire car down and painted it red w/ rustoleum paint w/ a paint gun. The paint still needs a good wet sand and a few more layers of paint to smooth out any orange peel or runs. As for our parts car (a 72' 914) we sourced a lot of trim, interior, exterior and wheels off the car and sold the rest. As for the body of the car we had to cut it up since we bought it (for $300) w/out a title from an engine machine shop out in west covina.

The most recent progress was that James purchased our radiator setup, that's to be mounted into the front trunk:

Next we needed to create a shrouding to guide all the air towards the radiator:

James made a mock of the shrouding out of cardboard.

As of right now, our plans are to purchase an engine management system either Super Squirt or some other one. Run the coolant lines from the radiator to the motor. Refresh the brakes. Find wheel hub adapters to convert the current lug pattern 4x130 to 4x100 and purchase some affordable rims and mount some 205/50/15 Azenis RT-615 we got off craigslist a while back. Purchase some replacement bushing for the entire solid shift linkage.

Managed to fabricate the radiator shroud a few weeks back:






then we got bored and started blue taping :D

Yeah i can't wait for it to be finished. You could check it out in it's current condition if you wanted. Might work on it this weekend.

Shoot just realized who you were! Man our project can't compare to the work you've done for your RS220 project. I'd like to check that out one day.

Update:
Purchased wheel adapters that convert the bolt pattern from 4x130 to 4x100. Wheels we have chosen to go with are a genuine set of 16x7 Volk Te37 in Bronze. Purchased 4 new rotors for all 4 corners. Gonna build a GT engine lid:
