1st attempt at rev matching:2002 is300 5spd

so i went out tonight for a few hours to learn how to rev match, started out kinda rough but i some what got the hang of rev matching from 4th to 3rd; 3rd to 2nd. but i had the hardest time getting from 2nd to 1st. some times it wouldn't go in at all, most of the time it started grinding which kinda scarred me so i would stop trying to shift. and a lot of the tries that i did get into 1st it would grind just a lil bit. there were some shifts i manged to do very smoothly w/o grinding. one thing i noticed was that when i was driving very slow in 2nd, i didn't need to blip the throttle as much when rev matching and down shifting, about 900-1000rpm. but when i am going faster i needed much more blip, around 2000rpm. is this correct or was i wrong in thinking this? and how can i get better at down shifting into 1st? any help would be much appreciated and just FYI this is my 1st stick shift. TIA

depends on your speed and what gear you are trying to get into. its rev matching so you vary your revs depending on your speed. I used about 1000 rpm for every 5 mph when going into 1st gear, ie-25mph=5000 rpm. 2nd gear is a little different...i use about 4500 rpm at 40 mph. 3rd gear, about 5k at 70 mph and if you are rev matching into 4th, then you are at a high speed track. just keep doing it and you will get a feel for what revs work best for the speed/gear combo you are looking for.

Faster you go, higher the rev. If you ever notice, when you're driving and you downshift letting go of the clutch the rpms will jump up. So when you're "rev matching " your matching those rpms when down shifting so that the motor dose not jerk at the sudden rpm change. Keep that in mind while driving. Might help. I say, as your driving normal, watch your speed and where your rpm is at during that speed just so you can kinda get an idea of what rpm to rev to when rev matching while down shifting. Hope that helped and I didn't confuse you lol

its also generally not necessary to shift to 1st unless you are stopped or barely rolling. Otherwise i just keep it in 2nd since 1st gear is so short anyway

Yeah you should be able to get it smooth but that's if you're driving super slow lol. I've only gotten to 1st on the streets when I didn't feel like braking just wanted to take off. But on the tracks, its rare.

The syncros for first gear are not back cut so you shouldnt be able to shift into 1st faster than about 8-10 mph. They do this intentionally so you dont accidentally drop it into 1st at speed.

Yes its totally different lol. No 1st is rarely used. Only when you mess up and end at a dead stop do you go back to first. Otherwise, lowest you go is second on any corners.

Even if youre autocrossing you wont need 1st gear on tight corners.

its not impossible but its absolutely not necessary to downshift to 1st. You can engine brake in 2nd, and you can do tight corners in 2nd. I only use 1st to accelerate after a stop. Most cars make it difficult for you to downshift to 1st to be honest, if you don't match the rpm right you will damage your synchros.
