EFI relay clicking and draining battery

Please can someone help. I have an IS200 52 plate. The efi relay is clicking frantically - it's baffled several service mechanics, specialist auto electrician and Lexus dealership. First happened 6 months ago, drained the battery, couldn't stop it, then it just stopped by itself. The fault wouldn't reappear when it was in any of the garages so they weren't able to trace it. Then it happened again a month later, took it into the Lexus dealership, fault disappeared again when I got there, so they couldn't trace it, but they thought it was something in the ignition. They removed 'excess grease' from the ignition. It was fine for 5 months now it's doing it again and I'm desperate to find a solution as I rely on my car for work, but worried no-one seems able to solve it. Help!! It stops when I put the key in the ignition, even without turning it.

For info: The above and I have eliminated: The relay switch itself - swapped with the horn relay - still clicking; all earths been tested and fine; it's not water ingress on electrics as happened when no rain for days; battery absolutely fine, as is the alternator; key had new battery.

Desperate to find a solution quickly. Please can anyone help. I saw a post on this site from 2007 with the same problem on an IS300, but it didn't say if it was resolved by replacing the ignition components: link

Many thanks.

Hi, sorry this is not much help - but I have the same problem so if you get any answer please let me know!! I have also had the key not being recognised presumably due to the flat battery, and am in process of trying to work out what it is.

bad alt? bad battery? I know im still on the stock battery and if i leave my heads on when i shut off the car the battery is done, then when i go to click it back on it makes a fast clicking sound till i turn off the key. My battery can die in 3 minutes, just been too lazy to replace it.

Did someone say headlights? Yes we do them and do them well!!!

Hi Carrie, I've now sorted out my clicking relay and a few other problems. Water had got into my passenger side junction box, as the last owner put a power cable for an amp from the battery to the rear of the car and the hole allowed water in. Easy to fix if you find the problem. But water ingress in definetly an option.

Hello, I've just had the same repeat problem. It is allied to the problems already mentioned. What the auto electrician found was that He checked the junction harness plugs and found corrosion in the wiring harness plug on the passenger side under the dashboard.

we have similar problems in the uk when we get heavy rain especially if the windscreen has been replaced.

alot of guys on my forum have found corroded terminals in our drivers side so your passenger foot well and can throw all sorts of weird problems from headlights staying on auto light feature not working etc

I have had this problem with my IS200 that i recently got & have found that if when i turn off the engine i slowly remove the key from the ignition and this in turn stops the EFI Relay from clicking but when i turn off the engine and remove the key swiftly the relay clicks?
Its worth a try as it seems to work for me....SO FAR lol.

This is common in 2001 IS300's and there was actually a TSB for it. Most likely it is the ignition switch micro switch causing the clicking. See the links below.

You can rule out all other possibilities by disconnecting the harness connector on the ignition switch.
