i have mine ziptied in a similar fashion. i'd like to venture and say that i'm one of the first people to flip the mounting plate upside down to avoid the front lip. of course mine isn't quite done as neatly or carefully as doncorleone's... my front plate actually rests on the bumper. no paint damage after about... 2.5 years? i just use a piece of weatherstripping to keep the plate slightly spaced out from the bumper. and clean it out every time i wash my car.

Great tutorial DonCorleone +rep

...on mines, I cut/shave the plates so it would fit within the OEM bumper grill. The "California" is still visible & ziptied it. Since the pic was taken at an angle from the top the "California" is somewhat hidden.

i also ziptied my front plate on, but i used the stock bracket...i know this isn't the best pic, but you can see what i mean. my car's the TCM, hence my username. (i'm borrowing one of J's pics. thanks, J!)

all i did was stick 2 zip ties through the top 2 holes of the stock bracket. tighten (screw) my front plate onto the stock bracket, which holds the (not yet closed) zip ties in place as well. then i simply looped each zip tie through my lower grill (on each side) & tightened them. voila! i'll try to get a close up pic...

Anybody tried this on the 2006 IS? I'd be curious to see a picture. Got stopped by a cop today and warned for having no front plate, so I'm looking for a no drill solution - but also don't really want to zip tie it.

I'm sure you could get it from the dealership, shouldn't cost you too much. If not keep an eye out on the f/s forums.

Good old thread, this should be made sticky if it isn't already, I'm expecting my plates in the mail and I was wondering what to do about this or to live with the fix-it tickets because I was sure I didn't want to drill my bumper.

I think I'll try to do this mounting from underneath but see if I can't fabricate a mounting that mounts gives me a JDM looking angled plate install.

Not that I would ever be trying to beat a red light camera or anything.
I'll post pictures of what I end up doing if it turns out good.
