Why is it hard for me to find an original IS300 in manual transmission?

Still in the market. Why is hard for me to find an unmodded IS300 manual? Yet, if I go search for S2000, I can easily find TONS of them in stock condition, even well maintained. Is it me or do I see more manual IS300s modded than the S2000?

1 - They're old.
2 - There weren't many of them.

Weren't all S2000's manual? IS300's got cheap pretty quick so, they're an easy entry way for young people to buy a reliable mod-able car. The S2000's have really maintained their value compared to the IS300.

The is300 was/is an appliance car that was used like a condom... you use it and throw it away when you're done. The fact you still see IS300s kicking around, all riced out with 5 of negative camber and 250k miles is a testament to the design and build quality.

The S2000 was a sports car.

It isn't surprising it's hard to find a nice, 16 year old condom car.

It may depend on your personal constraints but some of the reasons may include "because it's too far" or "because they are asking too much".

Just looking around I have found several for sale all across the country.

I vowed never to get another one but I've gotten a hankering lately. My favorite car ever was probably my WRX. Second was the E36M3 .

Honestly while I like the idea of the S2000, when I've had one I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. One reason is they're very small. Smaller wheel base then a civic. The other is they have no torque to speak of. Even a stock IS300 has almost 50-60 more ft/lbs. You can't track them without a rollbar and installing one is a miserable process. One of the worst jobs I've ever done.

I've been thinking about finding a broken Legacy GT. They're cheaper than WRX's, a bit bigger but can be modded the same way a WRX can. Manual swaps with 100% stock parts are much easier than on the IS.

when I totalled my first IS, I was in search of a used legacy gt. those foos don't let them go. since I had an abundance of IS parts I figured; fuck, why not

Working LGT's seem to be about the same price as an IS of the same year range these days. Maybe $5-6K. Breaking is inevitable so it's just a matter of waiting till one with a blown HG shows up. In my experience, Subaru's aren't particularly reliable. On the other hand they're relatively cheap to fix. I just like how well they're built and how much hobbying potential they have. The engines are the weakest link.

I think I searched for around a year until I found mine on Craigslist, and I actually wanted a pretty rare combination - most important being it was manual. Manual alone (and in good, low mile, near stock condition) was not terrible, but when I wanted it to also be blue from the factory and have black leather, and near stock, it was REALLY difficult. So I compromised a little and I found really only a handful that I was interested in over a year or so. I recall going for one that was pretty close to stock, clean, silver but had (I think) black alcantara and was manual with only 55k miles, but it sold super quick.

Miraculously, I was able to eventually find a clean 2004 blue, black full leather, manual IS300 with 87k that checked out really well on test drive (only needed tires and a new battery). Other than paying a little more than I should have for it, I'm very happy with it. Pretty sure I overpaid by 1k but I don't regret it one bit just to make sure I got it. I'm also in SF and the seller was in LA, but we made it work because he came to the SF bay area around once a month so that month he just drove the car and flew back.

Point is, its old, and the 5 speeds are indeed rare. If you really want one bad, be patient and stick to it, and be ready to pounce. Maybe even be ready to travel. You'll eventually find one.

This. I found my 1 owner black on black manual for sale and flew out the following weekend to get it. Expand you search radius and be patient.

Theres a very clean example just posted yesterday in the Atlanta craigslist. Its a black car with 130k on the clock, and they are asking $11,000 for it. This one still has the factory air box and looks unmolested other than a CD deck. There is very obviously a tax for a good manual.

No way I'm paying that much for that many miles. I can find a better one on BaT with lower miles and better price if I waited long enough. On top of shipping it to California = ~$13k for a 15 year old car.

I am willing to pay good money as long as pricing is reasonable.
