I have a stock 05 with just over 100k that supposedly had a single owner (I purchased it from the dealership it was originally sold and serviced from). I'm pretty sure it was city driven based on dealership location, and the fact that the clutch is just about spent at 100k. I've read conservative highway commuters getting 200k out of stock, so could stop-and-go city driving cook a clutch in 100k, or is this indicative of aggressive driving habits?
I don't know the age of the original owner, or if one of his kids ended up with it at some point, but the interior is in great shape so hopefully not (damn whipper-snappers!).
Anyway, at about 2200 rpm I notice quite the vibration from the engine. No noise is associated with it, just can feel it through the seat. I'm used to Honda's with extremely light rotational masses, and not having a driveshaft going to the rear (which shouldn't be spinning in neutral anyway, so that's not it). So, is this normal for the 2j, or do I maybe have worn engine mount. If so, should the engine mount be so worn out at 100k under "normal" driving conditions (I realize it is 15 years old too).
Also, the rear end is pretty noisy (whiny) and changing the gear oil is a priority (I don't currently drive the car daily), but could this be indicative of wear or a rough life as well, or is it just how they sound b/c of the cut of the teeth?
You really will need to chase the vibration to see if it is actually engine related. I had a noise and vibration that turned out to be the heat sheild on the exhaust rusted through and vibrating against another piece.
Im guessing you are talking 100k miles? Most clutches i have had to do are on anything from 160k km (~100k miles) upward, so if its a city car in stop start traffic then its possibly pretty normal. Sounds about right to me, but im not sure if the IS is better/worse with its dual mass flywheel.
Rear end should be pretty quiet, will depend on how well its been serviced and what condition the bushes are all in. Change the oil would be a good start, making sure if it is LSD or not for the right oil.
It's more like a rumble in that can be felt in the steering wheel and seat, and happens in neutral when parked. I think it's the motor mount, so am trying to determine if motor mounts usually go at 100k under normal driving (or if it was beat on).
Yes, 100k miles (sry).
I'm going to be changing the diff oil/fluid when I do the clutch (I barely drive it, just enough to "keep it loose" and the tires from not flat-spotting). Could a whinny diff indicate hard driving? I read a few random posts of people asking about noisy rear ends and some people have said it's normal, this was back when I first got the car a year ago and noticed it. But others have said it's quite. I guess the condition of the fluid/oil will maybe tell.

Stop and go driving is death to clutches. People who claim to get 200K miles on a clutch are probably people who do lots of highway miles. There's no wear on clutches when just cruising at 70. 100K is a bit low but not unusually so.
Is the exhaust stock? I'm wondering if the exhaust is touching anything and coupling vibration into the passenger compartment. The dual mass flywheels are wear items as is the damper on the front of the engine. The motor mount on my donor car for my V8 swap was snapped. I might have actually broken it on the test drive...

I'm almost certain it is completely stock, aside from the rockers being painted. I think it took a tap on the driver side door too b/c it doesn't close right, though the B-pillar looks fine thankfully. The hood gaps are uneven too, so may have been kissed on the front (the cross member looks unbent).
The vibration isn't that of a noisy heat shield or something rattling, it's actually more like a rumbling that can be felt in the cabin. Its coming from the engine and comes on in neutral at about 2200 and gets slightly stronger from there but then kind of planes off (though I haven't revved it too hight yet even though the oil looks like honey still). It can be felt in the steering wheel and seat. Hopefully it's just a mount. I'm just hoping the car wasn't beat on too bad, but no reason to worry too much about it. It's just I'm not used to spending this much on gas and parts being a Honda driver, and I have to buy a lot more tools too so it's like an investment really. Throwing money on a beat down car doesn't settle well with me, even though I do someday want a completely new transmission and rear end, including the Getrag v160 (that NIB one on ebay looks nice but is 17k), so most of it may be replaced anway. But still, it may not be and sold as "stock" and then I'd want top dollar so it would have to be strong and reliable.
Why arent we discussing a bad spark plug, coil, compression? If it hits at only 2200rpm it rules out everything outside the motor. Can you confirm the vibration is at 2200rpm no matter which gear you are in?
100k is pretty good on clutch life as others stated, maybe on the lowish side of good, but still. My motor mounts were both cracked in half but I didn’t notice until I did a motor swap. Guess that inline six is just that smooth LOL.
The diff should not whine. It will “clunk” when you start from a dead stop, and that’s normal for these cars. I would change the diff fluid and look at the drain plug magnet. Lots of people defer maintenance on the diff, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it had the original gear oil in it. Assuming it’s the stock diff, you do not need special gear oil for the LSD (if it has one). Torsen type diffs do not have clutch discs. Clutch type LSDs do need the specific gear oil however.
