Starting to get some progress on my build so updating finally, decided to create a new build thread since I didnt want it to be confused with my old sportcross. Here is a link to the my original sportcross build.

ABS relocation

ABS Relocation

Relocated the abs using the Altezza rhd bracket, planned on just bending and re-flaring the stock lines, but it wasn't looking as good as I wanted, so ended up buying the ABS relocation kit from finishing lines. Since my altezza bracket was about 8” closer to the fender than the kit was designed for, I asked they lengthen the lines that amount. When I got the lines they are super long, makes it difficult to make it look very clean. I need to find some brake line retainer similar to the stock clips but not finding anything yet. I personally like the look of hard lines better so might swap them out in the future.

Tunnel modification

Tunnel Modification

I have a lot of people ask about the tunnel, pedals, and clutch master cylinder installation. So here are some details of my second time.

In my first manual swap, I had created a box to account for the different height of the tunnel, and then later decided to complety remove the auto tunnel and replace it with a manual tunnel. It looked good, but it was a pita. This time around I decided to do it a little different.
Got a used manual tunnel for free, traced where I wanted to make my cuts

Clutch Master Cylinder installation

I trace a outline of the area cut out on the firewall on a piece of card stock, I just use junk mail, then center the clutch master cylinder on it to make a template.

Clutch/ Brake Pedal Installation

So after buying a RHD pedal set and realizing that there are not the same as the LHD pedals, starting looking for a used LHD set. I couldnt find anything at a reasonable price so decided to buy new. Ordered new parts from amayama and quickly realized I had ordered the wrong brake pedal DUH!!!! more on that in a little bit...

I know there is a clutch pedal thread here on the forum, but it is mostly incomplete, so here is a little more info

And finally 3 pedals again

Motor Maintenance

Getting ready for motor maintence, stripped the motor and painted the block black “no picture” had the turbo water lines for the old turbos tig welded shut. Cleaned them up, painted the water neck.

I had purchased my turbo kit new but second hand, so it was already all black, wanted to keep the motor somewhat symetrical so decided to paint the intake to match. Cleaned and taped up lower intake, upper intake, and throttle body, and painted wrinkle black.

had a problem getting the orginal map sensor tapped for the 1/8 npt size, so had that hole tig welded and made a new hole and tapped it.

Also taped the oil line union bolt for the pro efi oil pressure sensor... finished and installed

Day for motor maintenance, had my mechanic friend stop by for guidance, since..... well im a newbie to this sort of thing. Have all my parts organized waiting to be installed.

Not many pictures here, but tore down motor, for new titan modified oil pump. Didnt know there was orings on the pan and oil pump, off to toyota....

Honestly I think this motor had already had its major service done, many parts seemed like aftermarket brand, but I didnt want to trust anything so after a long day everything installed with new parts.

I'm interested to know where did you buy the m/t drive belt tensioner kit? This is something I need to do asap. Was there any modifications needed for it to fit? I had read before that the bolts didn't line up to block.

At one point I was doing research about the ar5 but another member on here who had tried that setup recommended that I shouldn't go that route. I ended up getting an R154 built with all the MC upgrades.

I bought a lot of my new toyota parts from amyama trading co, simply because it was less money than to buy locally from my toyota dealership. There are no modifications necessary to make it work, it all literally bolts on. I will say that the bracket in the diagram is not positioned correctly so i made me totally confused for about ten minutes lol.

As far as the AR5, well i believe it has proven itself a worthy alternative. Now will it be comparable to a MC R154? i dont think so, but i think it will suit me fine for my goals and driving style.

AR5 Swap

Some of you may have seen some of the information that I have helped contribute in the AR5 swap thread. Im finally getting around to getting mine put together. I have had some back and forth on what would fit my goals clutch kit wise, but here is what my final setup will look like.

AR5 5 speed, transmission mount/isolator
OS Giken R3C
OS Giken movement alteration kit
Sequioa custom driveshaft
Arp custom flywheel bolts
Drift Motion Stainless steel clutch line
New clutch pedal assembly/ Brake pedal assembly
M/T LSD
New OEM R154 Slave Cylinder
New OEM R154 Bellhousing
New OEM R154 Retianer/ seal
New OEM Bellhousing covers

Here is the AR5 transmission when I got it delivered, I was able to sell the bellhousing and shifter assembly for what I basically paid for the transmission.

image free hosting

Here is when I received another order from amayama. I had no R154 parts so I bought them new.

windows 7 print screen

with the jzx shifter housing it fits perfectly for the is300 application 29” from bellhousing front to center of shifter, exactly the measurement for the is300. The shifter housing is literally a bolt on part for the AR5, there is no modification necesary

A single disk clutch wasn’t going to work for my power goals, so after a lot of research I noticed a popular clucth was OS Giken. I had contacted driftmotion about getting custom disks for the AR5 26 spline input shaft, but they didn’t think the OS Giken would, and didn’t seem interested in finding out.

So I contacted OS giken USA and they said that the special order wouldn’t be a problem. I also noticed RHD Japan had much better prices with the OS Giken line, so after letting them know about my special Order, I ordered the RC3 triple disk clutch, with the OS Giken movement alteration kit.

Here it is

free screen capture

When I received it, somehow my special order got overlooked, and I received the wrong clutch hub. They had filled the order with a regular 21 spline hub for a R154, when I had ordered 26 spline. Luckily it was no problem and they sent out the right hub.

One of the reasons I choose this clutch kit, is because the unique way the hub is seperate from the disk. So in the future when I get replacement disks, I wont have to worry about a special order, I can just get the regular disk rebuild kit for a r154.

Installation of the movement alteration kit

I didnt receive instructions with my movement kit, but here is how I did mine.

Install this bracket, may note that the bottom side is longer than the top, if you dont install correctly it wont line up right. The guide post is also installed here. Everything has locktite on it.

Then remove two bellhousing bolts, and install larger peice

One of the big misconceptions out there is that you will need to trim 1” off the input shaft, but actually the input shaft could fit with out any modification. I decided however to trim 1/8' off the input shaft to make it resemble more like a r154 input shaft. I also tapered/rounded the tip to make it easier for installation.

screen capture windows

Install pilot Bearing, I got mine from driftmotion, but all you need is a pilot bearing with a ID 15mm and OD 32mm

image hosting over 2mb

photoupload

Install Flywheel. May note OS giken flywheel uses a reduced depth flywheel bolt, and that stock flywheel bolts torque specs are 36ftlbs + 90 degree. I used arp which has some different information out there, I just followed the instructions from drift motion where I bought the bolts, and used locktite and 75ftlbs.

how to screen capture

Mark them as I go, especially helpful when tightening the 18 bolt cover.

picture upload

While not necessary I picked up a steel alignment tool to easy assembly of the multiplate clutch.

And finally the bolted up the transmission to the engine

had to swap out the “slide pin?” on the slave cylinder to the one provided with the OS giken alteration kit.

Not a fan of the sportx, looks like station wagon lol but the fact that your one of the very few with a manual and swap makes it a collector's item. It's gonna be worth alot, definitely hang on to it
