Re-usable plastic rivets???

Yesterday I opened up my air filter compartment to check out my air filter and how gunked up it was. To do this, I had to remove the plast engine cover.

To take off the cover I had to remove by remvoing the plastic rivets (by pushing in the center of the rivet). These items are supposed to be re-usable, but I found that once I "popped" them, there was NO way they went back in like normal.

Some, could only be put back in with the use of a screwdriver, others went in very loose and don't "snap" back into place. In fact, I can just lift the engine cover off the car right now.

Is there a special way to put these back, or should I just buy new ones?

It seems like some partially broke when I removed them so I don't know if they can be put back.

Actually, does anyone really know if they are meant to be re-usable? My impressions were that they were a one shot deal.

Sometimes the expansion legs break off easily. You can take one down to NAPA auto parts where they have bags of different fasteners. I got some that fit by comparing the sizes. They unfasten differently, but I haven't had any break. Just look in the plastic bags for ones of the right length and diameter to fit. I got two bags and replaced all of the fasteners so they would be alike. The dealer has worked on my car twice and they haven't broken any of them so they are pretty good.

Bart,

I broke virtually EVERY single ONE I popped! In fact, I can't imagine NOT breaking them.

They are reusable. I take the covers on and off all the time. The trick is to push out the center pin out, gently pull the legs apart and push out the center pin. Once in that position, its a snap to put back.

I broke a couple at first, but then I got the hang of it. I replaced the ones I was missing from one of the loaner cars I got....

But I guess NAPA works too....

I guess the first time I did mine it was getting cold weather and I bent the little prongs too far and one on each fastener would break off. After I broke about 4 the rest were ok, but I wanted them to match so I got the ones at NAPA.

Great thread, Razal. I was wondering about the plastic rivets if they are re-usable. Glad to know they are.

lol when I had mine changed I was careful and luckily I managed to break none of them. But anyways, I don't like the fact that removing the cover is required to get to the air filter... coz the more we do this the more the rivets will wear out... and we'll end up having to buy them.

I'd just break those too. They just aren't thermally stable.
