help

Okay, so this is my first post ever and I don't want to sound like a total noob or anything; but I need some advice and help so I decided that a Lexus forum is probably the best place to go, since I don't know anyone who owns a Lexus.

To keep this simple,
I own an 07 Lexus IS250 and my car won't shift past 3rd gear.
All the lights are on and I was told that it was the shift solenoid.
I've gone to 2 local mechanics and they gave me a ridiculous price to get it fixed. Somewhere between $900-$1,200. I want to take it to a Lexus dealership but from what I was told, I would be up charged there.

Don't know if I'm getting taken advantage of because I'm a girl or? Lol
Anyways, just wanted to get feedback to see what everyone else thinks.
Or maybe I can just roll up my sleeves and fix something myself? Haha
Probably a horrible idea. I was totally kidding.

IMO, that's a fair price for parts and labor.

im not too familiar with the 250, but have you googled a DIY fix to see if its something you feel comfortable doing?

A lot of solenoids on a ton of cars are pretty basic to change out, but a PITA to get to. It might be feasible to try it out, if the part is super cheap compared to having it done.

And a dealership will almost always charge more for service. But you also have a better chance of getting it take care of properly.

As I read it the shift solenoid is inside the trans case and is pretty involved to replace. $900 - 1200 is probably about right.
