CEL Codes P0440 and P0446

Hey everyone,

My 02 IS300 with 53k miles and SRT Intake & ECU is having issues.

My CEL has come on 2 times in the past 600 miles. The first time it came on I noticed I was getting really bad gas milage (~17, usual 22mpg).

I reset the ECU, and I *felt* as if my milege was back to normal (looking back im not too sure, I was doing a lot more highway miles than usual). I also noticed an odd, not too loud popping noise coming from the top of the engine that corresponds to rpm that begins after the car is on a minute or so. Sounds like its coming from a single cylinder, but i dont know much about these things.

It came on again 300 miles later (along with the bad milage and i noticed the popping), and I got it checked at autozone, and the codes are as follows:

DTC CODES:
P0440
EVAP Emission
Control System
Malfunction

DTC PENDING CODES:
P0440
EVAP Emission
Control System
Malfunction

P0446
EVAP Emission
Control System
Vent Circuit Malf

Search is down, so I did the my.is google search and found a great post by Grey Rider:

I've looked over what i could (hoses, gas cap). I am asking for specific things to look for before i take it to Toyota (im not dealing with the jokers at Lexus of Jacksonville if i dont have to ever again). Is there anything else i should try/look for? How bad is it to keep driving with these issues?

Ive had the intake/ecu problem free since about 28k miles, and i just did a Mobile 1 Synthetic oil change 1.5k miles ago. No other mods besides my l-sportline kit, new tires, and new radiator cap (+20 hp, i swear) recently.

Thanks guys in advance, and sorry for another one of my novel sized posts.

Anyone?

I noticed today when i checked the gas cap again that i released a lot of pressure. Car was off overnight and there was a good amount of pressure built up ~6 hours after running the car.

Also the engine noise is really worrying me. I dont know if i am just noticing it more, but it sounds like cards on a fan and is fairly loud (goes with RPM).

Making an appointment tomorrow at toyota, but i have a busy week ahead. Im in gainesville if anyone wants to take a look.

I can only notice it if i am next to a wall when the hood is down. When the hood is up, you can def tell its there. It gets drowned out by the engine revving. Ill go ahead and record some audio later and see if i can catch it right before it starts.

EDIT:

Here is the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0caSRo8pjE

When the vid starts, the odd sounds is there (after 1 minute of idle). It goes away after revving the engine, then comes back after a few seconds.

The camera was right on top of the engine, then I move around the engine bay and come back on top of the engine, to where the noise is loudest.

How many miles are on the car? Are you noticing any performance issues? Hesitating? It sounds like a collapsed lifter from the video(even though very very hard to tell). as far as the MIL its probably a bad vent control valve if your geting more pressure than normal from the gas tank.

Yes i forgot to mention, I have noticed a drop in overall power, and every now and then i will notice hesitation (loss of power no matter how much juice i give it). I meant to mention all this in the first post.

Car is at 53,000 miles as mentioned in first post.

I even told lexus of jax about these problems right before my warranty ran out (before CEL tho), and they just shrugged it off. Now I am out of warranty. Will this be covered under powertrain? Could the intake be the problem (dirt, airflow, etc.)?

This is starting to sound expensive. Any thoughts on cost? Should I take it to Lexus or will Toyota (or an independent in Gainesville) be fine? Should I stop driving?

Thanks for all the help!

Threre is a possibility your intake & race ECU has something to do with it, clean your MAF sensor first and let us know what happens.

Remove the intake.... Remove the piggyback ecu...

Reconnect stock ECU wirring and reset.

Re-install stock intake system..

This would be a good test to see if the intake and ECU are causing the issue...

I'm sure they are.

This should take you no longer than 30 minutes.
